About

Tomb Raider: Legend on PSP brings Lara Croft's 2006 comeback to Sony's handheld as a full third-person action-adventure, not the separate side-scrolling take made for other portable systems. Lara's search begins with the unanswered loss of her mother after a Himalayan plane crash and grows into a globe-spanning pursuit of a broken, immensely powerful sword. The result is an archaeologist's race through ancient myths, dangerous ruins and the unfinished business of Lara's past.

The main PSP campaign follows the same story, locations, level layouts and environmental puzzles as the PlayStation 2 version. Lara travels from Bolivia and Peru to Tokyo, Ghana, Kazakhstan, England and Nepal, following clues connected to King Arthur, Excalibur and former friend Amanda Evert. Conversations with Zip and Alister play over the action, while cutscenes keep the mystery moving between the expeditions. It is a focused adventure with a cinematic pace, built around a connected personal quest rather than a collection of unrelated tombs.

Exploration is the heart of the game. Lara leaps between ledges, scales walls, shimmies across narrow holds, swings from poles and ropes, dives underwater and slips through tight passages. Her magnetic grapple is central to the design: it can pull objects into place, clear obstacles and help her cross gaps. Switches, movable blocks, traps and physical contraptions turn each archaeological site into a puzzle space, asking players to read the environment before pushing forward.

Combat adds mercenaries, creatures and occasional boss encounters without replacing the platforming. Lara carries her signature dual pistols, can collect limited-ammunition weapons from defeated foes and uses grenades, melee attacks and the grapple to create openings. Her aerial attacks briefly slow the action, giving a well-timed jump a stylish tactical purpose. Hidden artefacts reward careful exploration, while replayable Time Trials give completed levels an extra challenge for players looking to improve their routes.

This PSP release was developed by Buzz Monkey Software from the PlayStation 2 version, so it preserves the console game's full 3D adventure instead of reducing it to a new 2D design. The trade-off is visual: textures and some presentation are scaled back for the handheld, though the large environments, voice work and orchestral score remain part of the experience. It is best approached as a compact way to take Legend's original campaign on the road, with the same core destinations and puzzles rather than a radically remade PSP story.

The handheld's single analog stick also changes how it feels to play. Camera movement is mapped around the PSP's limited controls, requiring the Square button to be held while using the analog nub to look around. That arrangement can make precise jumps, aiming and camera adjustment more demanding than on PlayStation 2, especially in busy fights or narrow climbing sequences. The port still offers Lara's acrobatic toolkit, but its control scheme is a meaningful PSP-specific consideration, not a feature shared unchanged with the home-console release.

Where the PSP version goes beyond the standard campaign is Tomb Trials, its exclusive set of short challenge modes. These let players tackle timed obstacle runs and treasure-focused tasks in areas drawn from the adventure. The Trials can be played alone, and the PSP also supports local ad hoc multiplayer for two players. Its competitive modes include races through a level, artifact-hiding searches and beacon-activation contests, making this the version with a small but genuine extra activity after the story.

Tomb Raider: Legend is a strong fit for players who want a brisk, story-led Lara Croft adventure with platforming, puzzles and treasure hunting at the foreground. It marked the seventh main Tomb Raider game and helped reintroduce Lara with smoother, more fluid movement after the series' troubled previous entry. On PSP, it is a technically ambitious portable version whose appeal lies in carrying that 3D journey with you, plus Tomb Trials, provided you are ready to work with its handheld camera controls.
