About
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus is a 2007 PlayStation Portable stealth-action game developed by Kojima Productions and published by Konami. Released as a standalone expansion to Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, it does not require the original game to run. Rather than retelling or extending Portable Ops' cinematic campaign, MPO+ reshapes its tactical sneaking, squad management, and competitive systems into a mission- and multiplayer-focused package.
The defining difference from Portable Ops is the absence of that game's story mode. In its place is Infinity Mission, a single-player challenge mode built around successive operations through locations drawn from Portable Ops. Missions arrange objectives, enemies, and situations into changing runs, asking players to navigate with stealth, reach an exit, survive alerts, or meet special conditions while managing a small deployed team.
Infinity Mission is also the heart of MPO+'s solo recruitment and development loop. Captured enemy soldiers, recovered equipment, and earned experience can strengthen a player's force when a run is successfully completed or exited, while casualties and lost supplies make risk management matter. Its difficulty settings introduce the system before escalating into longer, tougher operations, giving the PSP game a repeatable alternative to a conventional campaign.
Recruitment remains central to the experience. Players build a large roster of soldiers with different aptitudes, skills, and careers, select personnel for missions, and improve their options through the people and gear they acquire. Portable Ops save data can be carried into Plus, allowing an existing squad to move across; players starting with MPO+ can still assemble a force through its own missions and recruitment systems.
At launch, MPO+ expanded the original game's competitive play with new maps, weapons, items, character types, and match options. Local Ad Hoc sessions let nearby PSP owners host or join games, while the original release also supported online competition. Match rules can be tailored around player limits, team balance, friendly fire, weapon categories, and other settings, supporting Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture Mission, and Team Capture Mission battles.
The added roster deliberately reaches across the Metal Gear series. Alongside returning Portable Ops personalities and recruitable troops, players can encounter and use new soldier varieties inspired by earlier games, including Genome Soldiers and forces associated with Metal Gear Solid 2. Infinity Mission rewards also make crossover characters part of the long-term goal: Old Snake, Raiden, and Roy Campbell are among the notable unlockable additions.
Portable Ops Plus is therefore best approached as a companion release for players who want more of Portable Ops' mechanics rather than its narrative. It keeps the third-person infiltration, CQC, weapons, camouflage-minded movement, and team-switching foundations, but puts them to work in repeatable single-player runs and customizable competitive matches. For collectors and PSP-era Metal Gear fans, its standalone structure, imported squads, expanded personnel pool, and focused Infinity Mission make it a distinct version rather than a replacement for the original Portable Ops.
