About
Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete for PlayStation is a story-driven Japanese role-playing game released in North America in 1999 by Working Designs. It is the PlayStation version of Game Arts’ remake of the 1992 Sega CD game Lunar: The Silver Star, following the Sega Saturn release of Lunar: Silver Star Story in Japan. The PS1 port was handled by Alfa System, while the North American edition adopted the Complete title. Its adventure unfolds on the world of Lunar, combining town exploration, dungeon journeys, animated story scenes, and a party-centered quest to become the next Dragonmaster.
Players control Alex, an aspiring adventurer from the village of Burg who looks up to the legendary Dragonmaster Dyne. His early travels with childhood friend Luna, the curious white creature Nall, and would-be merchant Ramus open into a larger journey across the world. Alex meets allies including magician Nash, priestess Jessica, swordsman Kyle, and mage Mia, while a conflict involving the powerful Ghaleon pushes the group toward the trials associated with the Dragonmaster. The remake expands the original game’s cast and scenarios while retaining its central coming-of-age adventure.
Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete uses an overhead perspective for its towns, fields, and dungeons. Enemies can be seen moving around many dangerous areas, so encounters begin when the party makes contact rather than arriving as the constant random battles used in the earlier Sega CD version. This lets players judge routes through a dungeon and choose when to approach enemies. The overworld does not place monsters directly in the party’s path, keeping travel between major locations focused on exploration and story progress.
Combat is turn-based but gives positioning an important role. Characters must stand within range before they can strike an opponent, and turns can be spent attacking, casting magic, using items, defending, moving, or attempting to flee. Winning battles earns experience and helps the party grow stronger, while weapons and armor found or bought during the adventure improve their options. The game also includes an auto-battle feature for setting actions in advance, and Nall can assist the group in battle by reviving fallen companions.
The PlayStation game presents its fantasy journey with two-dimensional character and background art, voiced scenes, and anime-style full-motion animated sequences. Character designs are associated with artist Toshiyuki Kubooka, and Noriyuki Iwadare composed the remake’s music. The remake revised locations, dialogue, quests, items, and character roles from Lunar: The Silver Star, with Luna accompanying Alex for more of the adventure and receiving a larger presence in the story. These changes make Silver Star Story Complete a distinct version of the first Lunar tale rather than simply a direct transfer of the Sega CD original.
The North American PlayStation release is also remembered for Working Designs’ elaborate collector-oriented package. It included the two game discs alongside a hardbound manual, soundtrack CD, making-of disc, and cloth map, making its presentation part of the release’s identity. Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete was followed by Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete and later received further reinterpretations, including Lunar Legend and Lunar: Silver Star Harmony. The PlayStation version’s story, visible encounters, positional battles, animated scenes, and expanded remake content also form the basis for its inclusion in the later Lunar Remastered Collection.
