About
Madden NFL 06 for PSP brought EA Sports’ long-running NFL series to Sony’s handheld for the first time in 2005. Developed by EA Tiburon and published by EA Sports, this licensed American football game recreates the league’s teams, players, uniforms, stadiums, and 2005-era presentation in a portable format. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb appears on the cover, while the game itself is built around the familiar Madden mix of play selection, on-field execution, and season management.
On the field, Madden NFL 06 PSP uses 3D, broadcast-style football with control of the offense and defense. Before the snap, players choose formations and plays, make adjustments, and use options such as hot routes; once the ball is live, the controls handle passing, running, tackling, and defensive coverage. Precision Passing is part of the handheld edition, allowing a quarterback’s throw to be led, placed behind a receiver, sent high, or kept low by directing the analog nub during the pass. That extra placement option adds a layer of decision-making to finding open targets.
The PSP version should not be confused with every feature of the home-console releases. Its layout does not include the QB Vision cone or the right-stick Hit Stick associated with some versions, in part because the original PSP has only one analog control. Instead, it adapts the core Madden structure to the system’s buttons and analog nub while retaining the essentials of a full NFL game: offense and defense, special teams, playbooks, roster-based matchups, and multiple ways to play individual games.
A substantial Franchise mode lets players guide a club beyond a single exhibition, while the PSP-exclusive Assistant Coach option gives the season experience a handheld-specific angle. The Mini Camp feature is expanded with ten PSP-exclusive mini-games that can be played separately or as a competition, providing short skill-focused challenges alongside regular football. Madden NFL 06 also supports both local Ad Hoc multiplayer and Infrastructure online play, so its original feature set covered head-to-head games as well as solo seasons.
Another PSP-specific convenience is its connection with the PlayStation 2 edition. Franchise game data can move between the two versions, allowing a season to continue across a console and the portable system. That makes Madden NFL 06 PSP more than a stripped-down companion: it is a self-contained football game with its own modes and a practical link to the PlayStation 2 release. As the series’ PSP debut, it established the basic portable Madden formula of licensed NFL football, season play, and quick competitive sessions for the hardware.
