About
Fate/Extra for PSP is a single-player dungeon role-playing game from Type-Moon and Imageepoch, originally published by Marvelous Entertainment in Japan on July 22, 2010. It takes the Fate series into a separate parallel-world storyline rather than retelling Fate/stay night. Aksys Games brought the game to North America in 2011, while Ghostlight published it in PAL territories in 2012. On Sony’s PlayStation Portable, Fate/Extra combines long, choice-driven conversations with strategic one-on-one battles in a virtual Holy Grail War.
The player names and chooses the gender of Hakuno Kishinami, a student who wakes at Tsukumihara Academy without a clear memory of the past. The academy proves to be part of SE.RA.PH, a digital world administered by the Moon Cell Automaton. Masters and their summoned Servants are competing for the Moon Cell’s wish-granting power, and the contest advances through elimination battles. Hakuno’s mystery and the pressure of surviving the tournament give the story a personal thread alongside the larger contest.
Early in the adventure, the player forms a contract with one of three playable Servants: Saber, Archer, or Caster. That choice affects the partner at Hakuno’s side and the style of combat used throughout the campaign. Between fights, the Academy supplies story scenes, character interactions, shops, and opportunities to investigate rival Masters. The game’s text-heavy presentation lets its visual-novel influence sit beside the RPG structure, with dialogue and tournament preparation forming a regular part of each in-game week.
Exploration takes place in the Arena, a series of 3D dungeon areas populated by hostile programs. Clearing encounters provides experience and money, while required quests send the player searching for targets or items before the next decisive match. The Arena is also where Hakuno gathers intelligence on opponents. Information added to an enemy’s Matrix can reveal more of that foe’s planned actions, turning dungeon work and preparation into a practical advantage when a Servant duel begins.
Battles are isolated one-on-one confrontations in which the player queues six commands for their Servant before both sides carry them out. Attack, Guard, and Break counter one another in a circular relationship: Attack defeats Break, Guard defeats Attack, and Break defeats Guard. Skills add another option and consume MP, while Servants can also call on their distinctive Noble Phantasms when available. Learning an enemy’s patterns matters because revealed commands make it possible to plan a stronger sequence; three successful commands in succession can also trigger an extra attack.
Fate/Extra uses familiar Fate names and concepts while giving its alternate setting its own versions of characters and circumstances. Rival Masters, their legendary or historical Servants, and the changing alliances of the Holy Grail War fill out the tournament as Hakuno advances. The game later led to the Japan-only companion title Fate/Extra CCC, whose story follows an alternate route rather than a direct continuation. For the PSP, Fate/Extra stands as a distinctive Fate spin-off built around the contrast between Academy investigation, dungeon exploration, and calculated Servant command battles.
