About

Corpse Party: BloodCovered ...Repeated Fear is the PlayStation Portable version of Team GrisGris’s horror-adventure remake, released in Japan in 2010. XSEED Games brought the game to North America in 2011 under the shorter title Corpse Party. Built from the 2008 Windows game Corpse Party: BloodCovered, this PSP edition recasts a 1996 PC-9801 cult game in a tense, story-led format that combines top-down exploration, dialogue-heavy scenes, and a deliberately retro 2D presentation.

The story begins with students from Kisaragi Academy gathering after school to perform the Sachiko Ever After charm, a ritual meant to keep friends together. Instead, the group is separated and drawn into the ruined Heavenly Host Elementary School, a place marked by murders, disappearances, and lingering spirits. Players follow Satoshi Mochida, Naomi Nakashima, Ayumi Shinozaki, Yoshiki Kishinuma, Seiko Shinohara, and their classmates and teacher as they search the school for one another and for a route home.

Corpse Party PSP plays from an overhead perspective. Exploration centers on moving through classrooms, corridors, infirmaries, and other threatening spaces; examining objects; collecting key items; reading notes; and speaking with survivors. There is no conventional combat system. Danger instead comes from hostile encounters, environmental hazards, and choices that can bring a chapter to an abrupt and often fatal conclusion. Careful investigation and sensible use of saves matter because a disastrous decision can send the story to one of its many Wrong Endings.

The main narrative is divided into five chapters, with the cast and circumstances shifting as the group’s situation worsens. Decisions, discoveries, and survival affect progress toward the proper conclusion, while optional material expands attention beyond the central route. Dialogue scenes use character portraits alongside the small in-game sprites, letting the game move between exploration and more novel-like storytelling without abandoning its compact handheld structure.

Repeated Fear distinguishes itself from the earlier Windows BloodCovered release with revised visual presentation, higher-resolution character sprites, new illustrated stills, arranged music, and an animated opening. It also uses Japanese voice work and binaural sound design to place cries, footsteps, and unseen threats around the listener; headphones can make its directional audio especially striking. The result is a horror game that often leaves the most disturbing images to imagination rather than relying on realistic graphics.

For the PSP, Corpse Party is a single-player journey through the opening arc of the rebooted continuity, not a remake of the later Book of Shadows. Its mix of branching outcomes, environmental searching, and supernatural school horror made it a significant international entry point for the series. Later editions on other platforms added their own content, but the PSP release remains the version that introduced many English-language players to Heavenly Host Elementary School and its tragic history.
