About

428: Fuusa Sareta Shibuya de for PSP is the 2009 PlayStation Portable edition of Chunsoft's live-action sound novel adventure, originally developed by Chunsoft and published in Japan by Sega. First released for Wii in 2008, the game moves its suspenseful, choice-driven drama to Tokyo's Shibuya district. Its Japanese title, often rendered internationally as 428: Shibuya Scramble, refers to the Shibuya setting and the date around which its story unfolds.

Rather than following one hero from beginning to end, 428 lets the player read five storylines that run side by side across the same ten-hour day. A detective, a former street-gang leader, a scientist, a freelance writer, and an amnesiac mascot worker each confront their own immediate problems as a kidnapping case begins to widen. Their scenes overlap in time and place, so a decision that seems minor in one viewpoint can leave another character stranded, put an investigation on the wrong path, or open a route that was previously unavailable.

Progress is built around choosing responses and actions, then moving between protagonists when the narrative signals a connection. Wrong turns do not simply end a single scene: they can create bad endings or expose why a different decision is needed elsewhere in the timeline. A chronological chart helps organize the five parallel accounts by hour, while selectable in-text Tips provide short explanations, background details, and occasional detours. The structure turns reading and revisiting scenes into the central game mechanic, asking players to identify the chain of cause and effect linking the cast.

Shibuya is more than a backdrop in this PSP visual novel. The story uses the ward's streets, station area, crowds, and landmarks to connect a police pursuit, a ransom exchange, scientific threats, publishing deadlines, and comic side situations. Scrolling prose is paired with a large collection of live-action still photography and video footage, giving the urban mystery a deliberately different presentation from illustrated visual novels. The tone shifts between crime thriller, comedy, drama, and more unusual scenario material while keeping the major events on the same clock.

The PSP release arrived in Japan on September 17, 2009, following the original Wii version, with Sega as publisher. It belongs to Chunsoft's sound novel tradition and shares a Shibuya location and multi-perspective storytelling ideas with the earlier Machi. The game also contains a separate scenario created with Type-Moon contributors Kinoko Nasu and Takashi Takeuchi; that material formed the basis for the Canaan television anime. Later editions brought the story to additional platforms, but the PSP version preserves the original Japanese text-and-live-action experience in a portable format.

428: Fuusa Sareta Shibuya de is a single-player adventure about navigating a dense web of simultaneous events rather than mastering reflex challenges. Its appeal lies in following clues across different points of view, using failed outcomes as information, and gradually bringing separate stories into alignment. For players exploring PSP visual novels, Chunsoft adventure games, or Tokyo-set mysteries, it stands as an ambitious example of how branching narrative design can make several characters' choices feel part of one connected day.
