About
Theme Park for Nintendo DS is a 2007 amusement-park management simulation developed by EA Studios Japan and published by Electronic Arts. It reworks the Bullfrog series' 1994 original for Nintendo's dual-screen handheld, putting the player in charge of planning, financing, and expanding a park from an undeveloped site. The Japanese release arrived on 15 March 2007; North American stores received it on 20 March, followed by the European release on 23 March. Although it shares its name and business-simulation foundation with the earlier game, this is a DS-focused remake rather than one of the later Theme Park sequels.
Each new park begins with limited land, money, and attractions. Players lay out paths, place rides and facilities, arrange queues, and decide where to leave room for future expansion. Visitors need more than a spectacular roller coaster: food and drink stalls, games, toilets, scenery, and shows all help make a park functional and appealing. Income comes from admission and sales, so pricing and placement are part of every building decision. A crowded route, an inconvenient queue, or an attraction that cannot handle demand can undermine an otherwise ambitious layout.
Running the park also means managing the operation behind the colorful rides. New attractions and improvements are obtained through research, while staff must be hired to keep paths clean, address mechanical problems, provide security, and entertain guests. Players can adjust the pace and depth of management through the game's simulation settings, choosing how closely to oversee areas such as research, supplies, negotiations, and finance. Success is measured by turning a modest local attraction into a profitable destination with the resources to move on to further sites.
The Nintendo DS version is designed around the system's Touch Screen. Its stylus-driven interface lets players select construction tools and menus while keeping the park itself visible across the two screens, adapting a mouse-oriented management game to portable play. EA Studios Japan also added four advisers to guide the player through park operations. Regional flavor is reflected in certain location-specific additions, with themed shops or rides associated with the countries in which parks are built. The result preserves the series' mix of playful presentation and practical planning while tailoring its controls and interface to the hardware.
Theme Park DS is a single-player building and management game, but it includes a local wireless park-sharing feature for showing a saved park to nearby DS users. The campaign-like progression of moving between locations gives each successful business a purpose beyond simply filling one map with attractions. For players drawn to retro business simulations, Theme Park Nintendo DS offers the familiar challenge of balancing guest satisfaction, maintenance, research, staffing, and cash flow in a compact handheld remake of one of Bullfrog's best-known management concepts.
