About

Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift for Nintendo DS is a tactical role-playing game from Square Enix, released in Japan in 2007 and in North America and Europe in 2008. A sequel to the Game Boy Advance game Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, it also belongs to the Ivalice Alliance line of Final Fantasy projects. The adventure follows Luso Clemens, a schoolboy on the verge of summer vacation who is drawn through a mysterious book into the fantasy world of Ivalice. What begins as an unexpected detour becomes a long journey with the members of Clan Gully, as Luso searches for a route back to his own world.

The central action takes place in turn-based battles on compact, grid-based maps viewed from an isometric angle. A clan is built from recruited units, and each character receives turns according to its speed. Positioning, movement range, attack distance, terrain, and the order in which units act all matter when planning a battle. On a turn, a unit can move, use a weapon, cast a spell, employ a learned ability, or use an item. Missions do not all share the same goal: some call for defeating the opposing force, while others ask the player to overcome a leader, protect a target, or fulfill a particular battlefield objective.

Character development is shaped by the series' Job system. Units from seven playable races can take on different jobs, and the equipment they use teaches abilities over time. This encourages players to consider both an immediate combat role and the skills a character may carry into another job later. The returning Humes, Moogles, Viera, Bangaa, and Nu Mou are joined by the Seeq and the winged Gria, with job choices varying by race. Weapons, armor, abilities, and party composition therefore become closely connected, whether a player favors frontline fighters, ranged specialists, spellcasters, support units, or a mixture of them.

Battles are overseen by Judges and their Laws, a defining feature inherited from Tactics Advance. A Law can restrict an action or weapon type during a fight; observing it earns benefits, while breaking it removes the Law's advantages and prevents a defeated unit from being revived until the battle ends. Rather than being only a prohibition, the system lets the player weigh a tactical reward against the limits placed on a mission. The Nintendo DS presentation also uses the system's two screens to keep battle information, turn order, and menus readily available while the action remains on the field.

Away from combat, Ivalice is explored through an extensive quest structure. Story assignments gradually open new places and events, while optional jobs, deliveries, clan activities, auctions, and training missions provide additional ways to develop the group. Clan Gully includes its leader Cid, the thief Adelle, and the moogle minstrel Hurdy, and Luso encounters familiar faces connected with Final Fantasy XII, including Vaan and Penelo. These appearances link the game to the wider Ivalice setting without making knowledge of Final Fantasy XII necessary to follow Luso's own adventure.

Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift builds on its Game Boy Advance predecessor with a larger quest-focused campaign and a deeper collection of units, jobs, and equipment to manage. Its lighter school-holiday opening contrasts with the fantasy world it reaches, while the long-running Final Fantasy traditions of magic, monsters, summoning, and distinctive races give the Nintendo DS game its identity. For players interested in a handheld strategy RPG centered on customizable parties and carefully planned encounters, the game offers a substantial Ivalice campaign built one mission at a time.
