About
Madden NFL 06 for Nintendo DS is a 2005 American-football simulation developed by Exient Entertainment and published by EA Sports. Released in North America on August 8, 2005, it brings the Madden NFL series and its licensed NFL teams and players to Nintendo’s dual-screen handheld. This is the DS-specific version of the annual game, rather than a direct conversion of the console editions: it is built around the system’s two screens, buttons, directional pad, and touch screen while retaining the familiar task of choosing a team, calling plays, and trying to outscore an opponent over four quarters.
On the field, Madden NFL 06 DS follows the sport’s basic rhythm of offense, defense, special teams, downs, and possession. Players select formations and plays before the snap, then control the active player as they run, pass, tackle, kick, or defend. The traditional controls handle movement and many actions, including ball-carrier moves such as spins, jukes, dives, and swats. Passing uses on-screen receiver indicators, allowing the quarterback to target a selected receiver after the ball is snapped. The handheld presentation splits the action across the two DS displays, with the lower screen supplying a field radar and play information to complement the game view.
The Nintendo DS touch screen also plays a central role in the game’s interface. It can be used to choose plays and access information such as a drive summary, player rankings, and game statistics. Madden NFL 06 introduces a touch-driven kicking system for this version: sliding upward across the lower screen sets a kick in motion, with the direction of the gesture affecting its path. It additionally offers a stylus control option for moving a player and throwing passes, alongside conventional button-based play. These alternatives give the DS edition its own approach to translating a full football game to a portable machine.
Several modes support quick sessions or a longer season. Quick games provide a direct matchup, while Season and Two Minute Drill modes focus on season play and late-game situations. Practice and Situational modes let players rehearse or set up particular football circumstances. Mini Camp presents football-themed challenges, and the DS release adds Franchise mode, giving players a continuing team-management option beyond individual games. Create features expand the customization further, letting players make a play, player, or team. The game also includes multiplayer: up to four people can take part in a wireless football game, while Mini Camp supports multiplayer sessions with multiple game cards.
Madden NFL 06 arrived during the Nintendo DS’s first year on the market, following Madden NFL 2005’s role as the series’ first DS entry. Its 2005 NFL rosters and broad selection of team, season, practice, challenge, and customization options make it a snapshot of that season of professional football as well as a portable Madden release. Exient’s version is consequently best understood on its own terms: a licensed NFL game designed around the strengths and limitations of the early DS, with dual-screen play calling, a touch-screen kicking interface, and wireless multiplayer distinguishing it from the same year’s console Madden NFL 06 releases.
