About
Call of Duty: Black Ops is a first-person shooter made specifically for Nintendo DS by n-Space and published by Activision. It arrived in North America on November 9, 2010, alongside the larger-console release, but it is a separate companion game rather than a portable version of Treyarch's campaign.
Set amid Cold War covert operations, the DS story follows CIA-backed operatives on deniable missions. Its 16-stage campaign visits locations associated with the era, including Cuba, Southeast Asia and the Soviet Union, using debriefings between operations instead of the console game's interrogation framing.
Most missions are compact infantry firefights, with scripted objectives, allies and a mix of weapons collected in the field. The campaign also breaks up the on-foot action with vehicle sequences: players can man an attack helicopter and fly an experimental stealth fighter, while some aerial stages use on-rails movement and target shooting.
The handheld controls are tailored around the DS hardware. Players may aim with the touch screen or choose face-button aiming, while the D-pad moves the character and the shoulder buttons handle aiming and fire. Touch-screen commands provide quick actions such as weapon management and a rapid turn, and the interface lets players place picked-up weapons into primary or secondary slots.
Arcade and Challenge modes revisit campaign material in different formats. Arcade play emphasizes score while limiting lives, whereas Challenge mode presents timed, objective-focused ground missions; completing these activities earns points toward additional achievements.
Competitive multiplayer supports up to six players locally or online and includes a condensed progression and Perks system. A separate two-player cooperative mode is included, and the game also offers Zombies survival: players can tackle it alone or cooperate to hold barricaded positions, earn points and improve their weapons across its maps.
This version is built for short portable sessions, with individual campaign missions designed to be completed in roughly ten to twenty minutes. Its combination of alternate controls, dual-screen weapon handling, vehicle missions and DS-focused local and online options gives it a distinct identity within the Black Ops release lineup.
