About
Ape Escape: On the Loose for PSP is SIMS and Sony Computer Entertainment's 2005 handheld remake of the first Ape Escape, the PlayStation platform adventure that introduced Spike's time-travelling monkey hunt. Released in Japan as Ape Escape P and in North America during the PSP's launch period, it rebuilds the original game's premise for Sony's portable system rather than continuing the storyline of Ape Escape 2. Specter, an unusually intelligent ape empowered by a Monkey Helmet, sends his helmeted followers through time in an attempt to reshape history. Spike is dispatched from the Professor's laboratory to find them before their mischief changes the world.
The central task in Ape Escape: On the Loose is to explore 3D stages, locate the escaped apes, and catch them with a Time Net. Each level has a required number of captures, while additional monkeys encourage players to revisit areas after gaining new equipment. The apes are more than scenery: their alert status changes when they notice Spike, and their differing behavior can make a capture a quick ambush, a chase, or a small fight. Some run for safety, while more aggressive monkeys can resist, so observation and timing are as important as simply reaching a destination.
Spike's gadget set gives the PSP game its action-platformer identity. The Stun Club can deal with dangers at close range, the Monkey Radar helps track targets, and later tools broaden movement and exploration across the game's historical environments. Stages range across eras and themed locations, with platforming routes, hazards, hidden pickups, and occasional vehicles woven into the chase. Cookies restore health, while collectible Specter Coins reward careful searching beyond the minimum needed to advance. The result is a campaign built around returning to familiar locations with a wider set of options and pursuing every last monkey.
On the Loose has to translate a design originally built around the PlayStation DualShock's two analog sticks to the PSP's single analog nub. Movement remains on the analog control, while the face buttons are used to operate gadgets, producing a distinct control arrangement for the portable version. This is one of the remake's defining changes: it preserves the original pursuit-and-capture structure while adapting actions that had previously been divided between two sticks. The PSP edition also presents revised visuals and substitutes its own bonus-game selection, giving this version details separate from the 1999 PlayStation release.
The adventure follows Spike through the consequences of Specter's plan, from the initial laboratory crisis to encounters with fellow characters caught up in the ape invasion. Specter's army has scattered across different periods, so the story's time-machine setup gives the stages their changing backdrops and makes recovery of the monkeys the narrative objective as well as the gameplay goal. Progress leads to confrontations with Specter and the forces supporting him, while the growing gadget collection makes previously inaccessible paths worth another look.
For the Ape Escape series, this PSP entry is a return to the beginning rather than a new numbered sequel. It carries the original game's combination of colorful 3D traversal, collectible objectives, and gadget-based problem-solving onto a handheld system, with the control redesign making it a version of its own. Ape Escape: On the Loose is a single-player journey through Spike's first clash with Specter, supplemented by unlockable diversions for players who search the stages thoroughly and aim to complete the full monkey roster.
