About

Style Savvy for Nintendo DS is a fashion and shop-management simulation developed by Syn Sophia and published by Nintendo. First released in Japan in 2008 as Wagamama Fashion: Girls Mode, it arrived in Europe in 2009 as Nintendo presents: Style Boutique and in North America that November as Style Savvy. Rather than treating clothing as a simple dress-up activity, the game builds a career around learning customers’ tastes, choosing stock carefully, and turning a small boutique into a successful fashion destination.

The player begins by working in a clothing shop before taking charge of a boutique of her own. Much of the day-to-day play takes place at the Buyer’s Center, where new merchandise is selected for the shop, and on the sales floor, where visitors describe the kind of look or item they want. The task is to interpret each request and offer clothes that suit the customer’s preferred style. Sales fund further purchases, so inventory choices and the ability to match shoppers with the right garments are central to the business loop.

The Nintendo DS is held sideways for play, with the touch screen used to browse stock and handle the boutique’s fashion work. The catalogue spans 16 in-game labels and more than 10,000 clothing items, accessories, and shoes, giving the player many possible combinations to consider. Boutique management also extends beyond serving individual customers: the shop’s interior and music can be changed, mannequins can be styled, advertisements can be sent out, and sales can be organized to shape the store’s presentation.

Fashion contests provide a separate route through the game’s progression. By preparing a look for the catwalk and meeting a contest’s requirements, the player can compete for prizes that support the boutique. Outside the store, the player character can change hairstyles, hair color, makeup, eyebrow shape, and other aspects of her appearance through the town’s salon and beautician. Magazine features, photographs, and outings add further fashion-focused activities around the core retail simulation.

Style Savvy also uses the Nintendo DS date and time, so the items, customers, and activities available can vary with the system calendar. It is chiefly a single-player game, but the original DS release included local wireless options for visiting other players’ boutiques, exchanging flyers, and taking part in fashion contests with nearby players. Its Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection features were tied to that now-discontinued service, while the local features belonged to the original Nintendo DS version.

As the first entry in the Style Savvy series, this Nintendo DS game established the boutique-running and customer-styling foundation that later continued in the Nintendo 3DS sequels Style Savvy: Trendsetters, Style Savvy: Fashion Forward, and Style Savvy: Styling Star. Its combination of stock purchasing, customer consultation, personal customization, and fashion competition makes it a distinctly retail-focused take on the simulation genre.
