About
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II for Nintendo DS is LucasArts’ 2010 portable action game and the sequel to 2008’s The Force Unleashed. Released in North America on October 26, 2010, it brings the series’ story of Darth Vader’s secret apprentice to Nintendo’s dual-screen handheld in a form designed around short, mobile play sessions. LucasArts published the game, while Lucasfilm Animation Singapore’s game division developed this distinct DS version. It shares the sequel’s central premise and Star Wars setting with the better-known console releases, but it is a separately built side-scrolling game rather than a reduced third-person console port.
The story follows a clone of Starkiller, Darth Vader’s former apprentice, whose inherited memories leave him unsure whether he is a replacement, a continuation of the man who died, or something else entirely. After escaping the cloning facilities on Kamino, he is drawn back into the conflict between the Empire and the emerging Rebel Alliance. Familiar figures including Darth Vader, Juno Eclipse, General Rahm Kota, PROXY, Boba Fett, and Yoda are part of the adventure as Starkiller searches for answers and confronts the forces pursuing him. The campaign occupies the period between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, continuing the Force Unleashed storyline in what is now the Star Wars Legends continuity.
On Nintendo DS, the action unfolds from a side-view perspective as Starkiller advances through linear stages, defeats Imperial troops and creatures, and takes on larger bosses. The directional pad handles movement, jumping, and dashing, while the stylus drives the combat: players swipe across the touch screen for lightsaber strikes and tap its on-screen commands to trigger Force abilities. That control scheme makes the touch screen central to the experience, turning lightsaber attacks and powers into quick gestures rather than the button-and-stick combat of the HD editions. Starkiller can fight with two lightsabers and use Force techniques such as lightning, push-style attacks, grip, and Mind Trick against enemies.
Combat is the game’s main loop, but the DS version also asks players to look beyond the straight route for collectibles. Holocrons can improve Starkiller’s health and Force reserves, while earned points can strengthen Force powers. These upgrades give the campaign a measure of progression as enemy encounters become more demanding. The handheld’s short stages and direct objectives suit a system that can be picked up for brief sessions, yet the adventure still moves through the sequel’s major conflict and builds toward Vader’s plans for his cloned apprentice.
The Force Unleashed II Nintendo DS stands apart from the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, and Wii editions because its 2D scrolling presentation, stylus-led attacks, and portable mission design were created specifically for the hardware. It is a single-player Star Wars action game that preserves Starkiller’s dual-saber and Force-power fantasy while adapting it to the DS’s screens and controls. For players exploring the different versions of The Force Unleashed II, this release is notable not simply as a handheld conversion, but as its own interpretation of the sequel’s characters, plot, and combat.
