About
Scooby-Doo! First Frights is a 2009 Nintendo DS action-platform game from Australian developer Torus Games and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Built around the classic Mystery Inc. team, it casts Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, and Velma as young sleuths tackling a run of cartoon-spooky cases. The DS release arrived on September 22, 2009 in North America, alongside versions for Windows, PlayStation 2, and Wii, and it accompanied the home-video release of Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins.
The adventure is structured as a series of four mystery episodes, divided into 22 levels. Its storyline starts at the gang's clubhouse, where a planned food festival at Keystone Castle gives Scooby and Shaggy a particularly urgent reason to keep travelling. The cases take Mystery Inc. through a high-school talent-show haunting, a closed amusement park and toy factory, the seaside community of Rocky Bay, and the looming Keystone Castle. Each setting supplies the familiar Scooby-Doo mixture of suspicious characters, apparent monsters, hidden schemes, and a final attempt to identify the culprit.
First Frights plays as a linear 3D platform adventure with combat, collectible hunting, and light environmental puzzles. Progress means breaking through groups of enemies, moving across hazards, searching side areas, and using the right member of the gang when an obstacle calls for a particular skill. The approachable, episode-by-episode format makes it well suited to players who want a guided Scooby-Doo campaign rather than an open-ended mystery game.
The five playable members of Mystery Inc. have different tools that give their roles practical purpose. Scooby attacks with a string of sausages and can crawl through vents, while Shaggy uses a slingshot and yo-yo. Velma throws books and operates machinery, Daphne can climb poles and use acrobatic attacks, and Fred brings strength for moving heavy objects as well as stun bombs. Swapping between these abilities turns many barriers into small character-based puzzles and encourages players to notice the details in each level.
Clues collected during the levels feed into a whodunit choice at the end of each episode. Players review the evidence and select the person they believe is responsible for the scare, a simple deduction element that gives the platforming campaign a distinctly Scooby-Doo conclusion. The game also rewards continued play with trophies, costumes, and other unlockables. Costumes alter a character's equipment or powers, adding another reason to revisit levels and pursue their secrets.
With its colorful stylized presentation and large cast of recognizable heroes, Scooby-Doo! First Frights aims for a family-friendly version of the action-platform formula. It balances slapstick fighting and straightforward exploration with the franchise's most durable appeal: unmasking a supposed supernatural threat through observation and teamwork. For Nintendo DS players, it is a portable Mystery Inc. adventure centered on character abilities, collectible rewards, and four self-contained cases.
