About

Nintendogs: Lab & Friends for Nintendo DS is Nintendo’s 2005 pet-care simulation, released in North America on August 22, 2005. Developed and published by Nintendo, it turns the DS into a home for virtual puppies, using the handheld’s touch screen and microphone as the main ways to interact. Lab & Friends is one of the original regional editions of Nintendogs; its European counterpart is titled Nintendogs: Labrador & Friends, while Japan received the related Shiba & Friends version rather than this exact release.

The experience begins at the kennel, where players choose a puppy from the edition’s initial selection: Labrador Retriever, Miniature Schnauzer, Toy Poodle, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Miniature Pinscher, and Shiba Inu. The selected dog can be named and brought home, then cared for through everyday routines. Stylus strokes let the player pet and groom its coat, while bowls of food and water, toys, and other supplies help maintain its condition. The dogs remain puppies, so the game is built around an ongoing relationship instead of an ending or a life-cycle simulation.

Training takes advantage of the Nintendo DS microphone. After demonstrating an action, players can record their own spoken command for a puppy to associate with that trick. This makes simple instructions such as sitting, rolling over, or shaking feel personal: a dog must be taught and practised with rather than simply assigned a menu command. Toys, balls, and flying discs add play sessions to the routine, and the touch-focused interactions make handling a puppy central to the game rather than a decorative extra.

Progress comes from looking after the dogs and entering them in contests. Obedience trials test learned tricks, agility trials turn training into an obstacle-course challenge, and disc competitions reward a dog that can chase and return a thrown disc. Successful performances earn prize money that can be spent on more supplies, accessories, and household options. Players can also take puppies for walks around town, where they may meet other dogs and find presents, giving each outing a practical reason beyond daily exercise.

Nintendogs: Lab & Friends supports one or two players, including the nearby wireless Bark Mode. With compatible Nintendogs games in range, players can arrange for their dogs to meet, exchange presents, and share recorded voice messages. The feature uses the Nintendo DS’s wireless capabilities and even detects other nearby players while the system is in Sleep Mode. As a player builds experience, additional dogs and items become available, expanding the kennel beyond the edition’s starting breeds.

Although the three original Nintendogs editions share the same core pet simulation, their opening breed lineups distinguish them. Lab & Friends therefore offers a different first choice from the North American Dachshund & Friends and Chihuahua & Friends cartridges, while later progress and local wireless exchanges broaden the collection. Nintendo’s combination of touch input, voice recognition, persistent care, and low-pressure competitions made Nintendogs a defining early Nintendo DS game, and the series later continued on Nintendo 3DS with Nintendogs + Cats.
