About
Nintendogs: Best Friends for Nintendo DS is a pet simulation developed and published by Nintendo. Released in North America on October 24, 2005, this particular edition was included with a limited-edition Nintendo DS bundle rather than being one of the original retail versions named for a single featured breed. It offers the same hands-on virtual-puppy experience as the wider Nintendogs release, with a starting kennel selected to combine popular dogs from the other editions.
Players begin by choosing from six breeds: Beagle, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Miniature Dachshund, and Yorkshire Terrier. Each puppy can be named, fed, given water, bathed and brushed, then cared for over time. The Nintendo DS touch screen is central to the interaction: stylus strokes pet a dog, while taps and drags help the player use bowls, grooming tools, toys and other household items.
The DS microphone gives training a distinctive voice-driven element. After a puppy has learned a trick through play, the player records a personal spoken command for it, allowing the dog to respond to phrases such as a chosen name or trick cue. Toys support more active sessions, including ball play and flying-disc practice, while a walk around town can lead to encounters, presents and other opportunities outside the home.
Progression comes through daily care, walks, collecting items and dog competitions. Obedience Trials, Agility Trials and Disc Competitions test different skills, and successful placements award prize money. That money can be spent on supplies, additional puppies and furnishings, giving the home and kennel a growing sense of variety without changing the game’s focus on caring for a small group of dogs.
Nintendogs: Best Friends distinguishes itself from Nintendogs: Chihuahua & Friends, Nintendogs: Dachshund & Friends and Nintendogs: Lab & Friends through its opening six-breed selection, not through a separate story or a fundamentally different ruleset. More breeds can be unlocked through normal play and by meeting dogs from compatible versions, so the edition choice shapes the early kennel while still encouraging discovery.
The Nintendo DS wireless feature, Bark Mode, lets nearby players meet one another’s dogs and exchange a brief shared interaction. It can also help broaden the available breed selection. Combined with the system’s sleep mode, touch screen, microphone and internal clock, this makes Best Friends an early Nintendo DS game built around routines and repeated small moments rather than a conventional final objective.
As part of Nintendo’s 2005 Nintendogs line, Best Friends preserves the series’ approachable mix of pet care, light collecting and skill-based contests. Its bundle-only North American debut makes its retail identity more specific than the main Chihuahua, Dachshund and Lab editions, while its gameplay remains a complete version of Nintendo’s virtual-dog simulation for the Nintendo DS.
