About

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 for Nintendo DS is a 2009 action role-playing game published by Activision and developed for the handheld by n-Space. It continues the Marvel Ultimate Alliance series with a compact, two-screen take on its superhero team combat. Rather than following one fixed hero, players assemble a four-character strike team from Marvel's cast and lead it through a story inspired by the Secret War and Civil War comic storylines. The Nintendo DS version places the active battle on the upper display while using the touch screen for quick squad information and commands.

The campaign begins in the aftermath of Nick Fury's unauthorized mission in Latveria, then moves into a conflict over the Superhuman Registration Act. A disaster involving super-powered figures pushes the United States government toward registration, dividing the heroes. Players choose whether to support the Pro-Registration cause associated with Iron Man or resist it with Captain America and the Anti-Registration side. That decision changes part of the middle campaign, including objectives, allies, and opponents, before the storyline converges on the larger threat facing both factions.

Combat is built around directing one hero at a time through 3D environments, striking enemies directly and activating character-specific powers. The other members of the chosen team fight alongside the controlled character, and the player can change the active hero as the situation demands. Encounters reward a mixture of close-range attacks, ranged abilities, crowd control, and careful use of each hero's energy-based techniques. Checkpoints also provide a chance to save progress and revise the squad, making the roster part of the tactical rhythm rather than a decision locked in at the start of an adventure.

A central addition to Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 Nintendo DS is the fusion system. Defeating enemies builds a shared star meter, and a fully charged meter can be spent on a powerful cooperative attack that combines the abilities of two team members. The touch screen helps manage this resource and can also be used to direct a revival when an ally falls. These choices give battles a useful tradeoff: save the meter for a high-impact fusion or spend part of it to bring a damaged team back to full strength. Different hero pairings produce different fusions, encouraging experimentation with the available roster.

Role-playing progression remains important throughout the adventure. Heroes gain experience, level up, and receive points that can be assigned to their powers and supporting abilities, allowing a player to emphasize attacks that suit a preferred style. The DS edition limits each hero to four active powers, giving its portable adaptation a focused progression model while retaining the series' team-building appeal. Its illustrated, two-dimensional story scenes and upper-screen action distinguish it from the home-console presentations, but its core appeal remains the same: guiding a changing Marvel team through a branching superhero conflict.

As the sequel to 2006's Marvel Ultimate Alliance, this Nintendo DS release arrived alongside several other platform versions in September 2009. Those editions were not identical, so the handheld version is best approached as its own n-Space-designed adaptation rather than a direct match for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 release. For players interested in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 on Nintendo DS, the blend of four-hero squads, touch-screen management, character growth, fusion attacks, and a choice between opposing Civil War factions defines the experience.
