About
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire for Nintendo DS is a 2005 action-adventure based on the fourth Harry Potter film. Developed for the handheld by Magic Pockets and published by Electronic Arts, it follows Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger through their fourth year at Hogwarts, when Harry is unexpectedly chosen to compete in the dangerous Triwizard Tournament. Rather than using the free-roaming school design of some earlier Potter games, this portable version presents the story as a sequence of overhead, mission-based areas and challenges.
Players choose Harry, Ron, or Hermione to lead the party while the other two young wizards accompany them. Exploration combines wand combat with environmental problem-solving: offensive hexes deal with hostile creatures and Death Eaters, while practical magic opens routes through the levels. Wingardium Leviosa can shift obstacles or handle objects, and some larger tasks call for the whole trio to contribute their magic. The character leading the group has different strengths in attack, speed, and defense, while the companions support the action and can be directed when help is needed.
The campaign visits locations and events drawn from the Goblet of Fire story, including the Quidditch World Cup campsite, Hogwarts, the Forbidden Forest, and the tournament’s three major trials. Harry must escape a dragon during the first task, search the Black Lake during the second, and confront the hazards of the hedge maze in the third. Large maps contain blocked paths, treasure, creatures, and puzzles, encouraging players to return once new spells make previously inaccessible routes available. Triwizard Shields are collected to advance, while beans and cards provide another reason to explore completed stages.
Nintendo DS hardware gives this edition features not found in the closely related Game Boy Advance release. Certain creature encounters switch to a first-person spell duel in which players use the stylus to trace shapes or connect patterns on the touch screen for attacks and defenses. The DS also includes touch-driven side activities such as catching Chocolate Frogs and sorting beans, plus a Dueling Club for head-to-head spellcasting. Its Care of Magical Creatures activity centers on looking after a Niffler with the stylus and microphone, feeding, grooming, and entertaining the magical animal according to its needs.
The game also adapts lighter moments alongside its combat and exploration, including a rhythm-based Yule Ball sequence. Its use of the two screens and stylus makes the Nintendo DS version a notably different companion to the Game Boy Advance release despite the shared core adventure. The main quest is built around Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s journey through the film’s key episodes, while collectible cards, reopened routes, touch-screen minigames, and selected two-player activities add variety around the central wizarding adventure.
