About

Colin McRae: DiRT 2 for Nintendo DS is a 2009 off-road racing game developed by Firebrand Games and published by Codemasters. It is the handheld DS edition of Codemasters' sequel to Colin McRae: DiRT, but it is a purpose-built version rather than a direct copy of the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, or PC game. Released in North America as DiRT 2 and in Europe under the Colin McRae: DiRT 2 name, it brings the series' dirt-racing identity to Nintendo's dual-screen portable with an arcade-leaning approach and a distinct set of features.

The game follows a world-tour framing that takes racing across a selection of off-road locations and event types inspired by rally and action-sports competition. Players drive licensed vehicles through races that favour quick reactions, sliding on loose surfaces, and finding a clean line through corners. The presentation draws on the wider DiRT 2 theme of modern rally culture, with the Colin McRae name remaining in the European title during the period after the rally champion's death in 2007.

Firebrand built the DS release with its Octane technology, the same foundation the studio used for its Nintendo DS racing work on Race Driver: GRID and Race Driver: Create & Race. That heritage is especially clear in the game's 3D courses, touch-screen menus, and track-building tools. The result is tailored to the DS hardware and should not be mistaken for the separately developed Wii and PlayStation Portable versions or for the larger EGO-engine console editions.

Progression gives races practical rewards. Events and victories unlock more cars and upgrades, letting players improve a vehicle and return to earlier stages in pursuit of better results. Customisation also extends to the cars' appearance through decals, while the portable format keeps the basic driving setup direct: steer, manage speed, and use the available grip to carry momentum through each course.

One of the edition's defining additions is its track editor. Players can use pieces earned through the game to assemble their own 3D courses, arranging sections of road and terrain and then racing on the finished creation. The editor offers a creative counterpart to the preset events, and it gives the game replay value beyond simply working through its unlocks. Created tracks can also be shared locally with nearby players.

Multiplayer is designed around local Nintendo DS connections rather than internet competition. The game supports races for nearby players, including single-card play in which friends can join from one copy of the game, as well as multi-card options. This makes it a social racing game for a local group, although it does not include the online multiplayer found in some other games from Firebrand's DS racing catalogue.

Colin McRae: DiRT 2 is best approached as a standalone Nintendo DS racer with a familiar Codemasters license, not as a scaled-down version of every feature in the home-console release. Its combination of accessible off-road driving, car progression, local play, and a 3D course editor makes it a notable entry in Firebrand Games' run of DS racing titles. Players looking for a compact rally-flavoured game can use its events and custom tracks to keep returning to the road long after the initial tour is complete.
