About

Disney/Pixar Cars 2 for Nintendo DS is a 2011 racing and adventure game developed by Firebrand Games and published by Disney Interactive Studios. Released in North America on June 21, 2011 alongside the film’s theatrical rollout, it adapts Pixar’s globe-trotting spy story for the dual-screen handheld. Lightning McQueen, Mater, Finn McMissile, Holley Shiftwell and other familiar Cars characters share the spotlight in a campaign that mixes World Grand Prix competition with secret-agent assignments. Although it shares its title and movie license with releases on home consoles, this Nintendo DS version has its own handheld-focused structure and missions.

The single-player story follows the film’s two connected threads. Lightning enters the international World Grand Prix, taking on rivals as the race moves between countries, while Mater becomes tangled in an espionage plot after being mistaken for an American agent. Between races, players guide Mater through stealth-oriented objectives inspired by the film’s spy material. These missions ask the player to avoid enemy vehicles and spotlights, reach marked destinations, or collect objects around contained areas. The result is a change of pace from the traditional checkered-flag goal: the same cast can be used for high-speed competition in one mission and undercover work in the next.

Racing is built around steering, acceleration, braking and sliding through courses based on the movie’s settings. Drifting helps cars maintain momentum through bends, while a turbo system rewards careful driving and the use of speed pickups. Characters also have individual tricks or abilities that distinguish them on the track; Lightning McQueen can jump, for example, while Finn McMissile brings his spy-themed invisibility to certain events. Shortcuts, obstacles and collectible items give races more to consider than simply following the racing line. Story events include standard contests, rival matchups and World Grand Prix races, gradually opening further content as the campaign advances.

Cars 2 on DS draws from the film’s international route as well as Radiator Springs, using locations such as Tokyo, Italy and London for its automotive version of a travel adventure. Dialogue scenes before and after missions help connect the playable events to the movie’s characters and spy narrative. Players can revisit completed missions, while separate Grand Prix cups provide a more direct route into racing. Some cups use themed fields or changing locations, keeping the focus on recognizable members of the Cars world rather than on anonymous real-world drivers and manufacturers.

Beyond the story, the game includes time-trial-style CHROME challenges and multiplayer racing options. Its roster grows through play, giving returning players new character choices alongside new tracks and events. The progression system uses mission results and trophies to unlock more of the campaign, so success in earlier assignments leads to higher-level challenges. This makes the game suitable for quick individual races but also gives its single-player mode a clear sequence of goals, from training tasks to larger race and espionage scenarios.

As a late Nintendo DS entry in the Disney/Pixar Cars game line, Disney/Pixar Cars 2 turns the second film’s unusual blend of motorsport and international espionage into a portable game with two main styles of play. Firebrand Games did not simply reproduce the larger-platform version: the DS release centers on its own sequence of driving races and Mater-led stealth missions. For players exploring licensed Nintendo DS racers, it remains a period-specific adaptation of the 2011 Cars sequel, combining Lightning McQueen’s pursuit of World Grand Prix glory with the secret-agent side of Mater, Finn and Holley’s adventure.
