About

Digimon Story Nintendo DS is a monster-raising role-playing game developed by BEC and published in Japan by Bandai in 2006. It was later released in North America as Digimon World DS, a localized name that can be misleading: this is the opening game in the Digimon Story line, not a continuation of the separately named Digimon World games. The adventure takes a new Digimon Tamer into the Digital World, where the goal is to build trust with Digital Monsters, investigate a growing threat, and assemble a capable team from a large roster.

The player explores the Digital World on foot, moving between areas, speaking with characters, accepting requests, and entering turn-based encounters. Battles place a party of Digimon against opposing monsters and make team construction central to progress. Each partner has its own abilities and strengths, so selecting a balanced group and choosing actions carefully matters as enemies become more demanding. The Nintendo DS presentation also gives the game room to keep adventure information and monster-management features close at hand across its two screens.

Collecting is tied directly to fighting. Rather than simply adding every defeated opponent to a roster, the player uses a scanning system during encounters to gather the data needed for a Digimon. That data can lead to new recruits, encouraging battles with many different species. More than 200 Digimon appear in the Japanese release, ranging from familiar early forms to imposing later evolutions. The result is an RPG loop built around exploration and combat, with the search for new partners continually feeding into the next stage of training.

The DigiFarm is the game’s other major pillar. Digimon can be placed at these farms for ongoing care and development while the player pursues the main adventure. A farm can be checked through a live display on the DS screen or visited directly to interact with its residents, including conversation and training activities. This gives the game a deliberate contrast between dungeon travel and management: a promising monster is not useful only because of its current battle statistics, but because of the evolutionary routes and improvements a player can plan for it.

The story centers on a Tamer drawn into the Digital World and the Digimon encountered there, with elements and characters associated with the Digimon Savers television era. As the journey advances, the player confronts the mysterious force known as Unknown-D. The premise supplies a framework for the quests and areas, while the collectible team remains the heart of the experience. It is a single-player adventure first, but the DS version also supports communication features for exchanging Digimon and battling another player through local wireless play. Its original online matching feature was designed to connect players through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

In Japan, Digimon Story arrived on June 15, 2006 as a training RPG for Nintendo DS. The overseas Digimon World DS title followed later that year, changing the name but not turning the game into a remake or a port of a PlayStation Digimon World entry. That distinction is especially useful for players tracing the franchise: Digimon Story established the DS-based RPG and raising format that later Story releases would build upon. For a Nintendo DS game focused on recruiting, evolving, and training a personalized Digimon team, it remains a clear early entry point for this branch of the series.
