About

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days is the Nintendo DS action role-playing game released in North America on September 29, 2009. Developed by h.a.n.d. and published by Square Enix, it turns the series’ focus toward Roxas, the Keyblade-wielding member of Organization XIII whose past sits at the heart of Kingdom Hearts II. Its title is read “three-five-eight days over two,” an appropriately cryptic phrase for a story concerned with identity, memory, and the bonds that make an ordinary day matter.

Set after the first Kingdom Hearts and alongside the events of Chain of Memories, the adventure follows Roxas through his time in Organization XIII. He awakens without memories, takes on the group’s daily assignments, and gradually finds a place beside Axel and the newly introduced Xion. Missions carry him from the Organization’s base through familiar Disney-inspired worlds and series locations, while quiet returns to Twilight Town give the game’s larger mysteries a human scale. The result is a character-driven chapter that fills in the period before Kingdom Hearts II without losing the series’ mix of Disney fantasy and original mythology.

The original DS game is built around Story Mode, where Roxas accepts missions to defeat Heartless, gather hearts, investigate disturbances, and face bosses. It plays as a portable action RPG: move through compact stages, strike with the Keyblade, cast magic, use items, and react to fast enemies in real time. The dual screens keep maps and mission information within view, making the DS format part of the game’s rhythm rather than just a smaller version of a console entry.

Its defining progression feature is the panel system. Weapons, magic, items, abilities, and character growth occupy spaces on a grid, so preparation becomes a meaningful part of every sortie. A powerful option may claim more room, while multiple panels can strengthen selected spells or actions. That system makes gear selection more than a menu exercise: the loadout you bring changes what Roxas can do in the field, whether the priority is stronger attacks, more magic, healing, or a different balance of tools.

Combat rewards timely aggression and practical planning. Roxas can chain Keyblade attacks, use magic against groups or targets at range, and trigger a Limit Break once his health falls low enough. As the campaign opens more missions and equipment, the game encourages revisiting its systems from different angles instead of treating each assignment as a one-time detour. The pace alternates between purposeful, score-conscious sorties and the story scenes that give their routine a growing emotional weight.

Multiplayer is a separate Mission Mode feature of the original Nintendo DS release, not drop-in co-op for the story campaign. Using DS Wireless Play, up to four players can tackle missions together as members of Organization XIII, each with distinct weapons, abilities, and statistics. The mode also supports competing for stronger results, giving missions a social, replayable angle while preserving the single-player story as Roxas’s journey. It is local wireless multiplayer, not an online mode, and the campaign remains fully playable on its own.

It is important to distinguish this DS game from its later HD presentation. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix includes 358/2 Days as a remastered cinematic compilation, with story scenes and additional voice work rather than a playable remake of the Nintendo DS game. That version does not reproduce the DS adventure’s mission structure, panel customization, or local multiplayer. For players seeking the complete interactive 358/2 Days experience, this is the original Nintendo DS release: a mission-based action RPG whose everyday routines slowly reveal why Roxas, Axel, and Xion’s friendship matters.
