About
Back at the Barnyard: Slop Bucket Games for Nintendo DS is a 2008 party-style action game based on Nickelodeon’s Back at the Barnyard animated series. Developed by Firemint and published by THQ, it brought the property to Nintendo’s dual-screen handheld as a DS-exclusive competition built around the first annual Slop Bucket Games. The North American release arrived on October 20, 2008, while European and Australian editions used the alternate title Back at the Barnyard: Barnyard Games.
Rather than retell the earlier Barnyard film game, this entry centers on a farm-animal sports day. Players join the familiar barnyard crowd to work toward the Slop Bucket trophy by taking on a collection of short events and arcade-inspired challenges. The format makes each contest a self-contained test, with the game moving from one activity to the next instead of presenting a single long campaign of platforming or exploration.
A free-roaming Barnyard hub connects the competition, giving the licensed setting a place to explore between activities. From there, the focus shifts to ten deliberately silly events shaped around the show’s comic animal world. Cowapult turns a cow launch into a target challenge, Chicken Launch sends chickens toward goals, and Whack-A-Rac adapts the quick-hit arcade idea to the game’s barnyard theme. Other contests draw on familiar sport and arcade concepts, including racing, shuffleboard, and target throwing.
The Nintendo DS version uses the system’s compact, pick-up-and-play format to frame these contests as brief rounds rather than a simulation of conventional athletics. Its farmyard premise lets the game turn livestock, produce, and exaggerated physical comedy into the material of each event; the original series’ cast and setting provide the license, while the competition supplies the game’s objective. The ESRB rated the North American release E for Everyone, with Comic Mischief, a fitting classification for its cartoon-styled animal antics.
Slop Bucket Games is also distinct from the 2006 Barnyard tie-in, which appeared on several home consoles and Game Boy Advance. This 2008 release was made specifically for Nintendo DS and was the first Back at the Barnyard game tied to the television series. Its regional name change is worth noting for collectors and catalogue searches: the same DS game known in North America as Back at the Barnyard: Slop Bucket Games was sold in Europe and Australia as Back at the Barnyard: Barnyard Games.
