About
7th Dragon for Nintendo DS is a turn-based fantasy role-playing game developed by imageepoch and published by Sega in Japan on March 5, 2009. Set in the threatened land of Eden, it casts the player as a newly registered hunter whose guild enters a world increasingly overtaken by dragons. The premise gives the adventure a clear long-term purpose: confront the dragon menace before humanity loses its remaining foothold. This Nintendo DS release is the original 7th Dragon, not the later 7th Dragon 2020 games for PSP or 7th Dragon III: Code: VFD for Nintendo 3DS.
Rather than following a fixed cast of heroes, 7th Dragon begins with character and guild creation. Players choose from seven classes—Fighter, Knight, Samurai, Rogue, Mage, Healer, and Princess—and select one of several appearances for each adventurer. A guild can hold up to sixteen created members, while parties take four characters into the field and into battle. That arrangement encourages players to think about a group’s offensive power, defenses, recovery, and specialized skills, as well as to prepare reserve characters for different situations.
Exploration is presented from an overhead view as the party travels between towns, outdoor areas, and dungeons across Eden. Settlements are more than simple stops on a route: quest boards offer optional work ranging from item requests to longer expeditions, providing reasons to revisit regions and develop the guild beyond the central mission. The game’s structure combines this quest-driven progress with a broad journey through a fantasy world under pressure, so regular jobs and dungeon trips steadily feed into the wider struggle against the dragons.
Combat switches to a side-view, menu-based turn system. Each four-person team acts through its chosen classes, with abilities learned through skill trees allowing members of the same class to develop in different directions. A party can therefore be tailored around direct attacks, defensive techniques, magic, healing, status effects, or support, depending on the available characters and the player’s priorities. Dragons are not merely a distant plot device: the campaign’s major challenge is tied to seeking out and defeating them as the party becomes strong enough to push into more dangerous territory.
The setting’s crisis centers on Eden, where dragons have spread across most of the world and imperil human society. The hunter’s work gradually grows from local assignments into a much larger undertaking, giving the custom-built guild a role in the fate of the setting. Character designs were created by Mota, monster designs by Akifumi Yamamoto, and the soundtrack involved Yuzo Koshiro and Ancient. Kazuya Niinou directed the project, while Sega producer Rieko Kodama was also part of its production team.
7th Dragon arrived late in the Nintendo DS era as a new Sega-published RPG property rather than an adaptation of an existing series. Its original Japanese release was followed by the related but distinct PSP titles 7th Dragon 2020 and 7th Dragon 2020-II, then the Nintendo 3DS game 7th Dragon III: Code: VFD. Those successors move the series into different eras and settings, making the DS game’s Eden-based adventure, four-member guild parties, and seven original classes an important starting point for the franchise.
