About

Zombie Hunters 2 is the European PlayStation 2 release of THE OneeChampon: THE OneeChan 2 Special Edition, an expanded edition of Tamsoft's 2005 Japanese game THE OneeChanbara 2. Published in Europe by Essential Games, it belongs to D3 Publisher's deliberately low-budget Simple 2000 lineage, but it is not simply the earlier European game Zombie Hunters under a new name. It is the later entry, built around a new outbreak and a larger version of the series' sword-and-zombie formula.

The action follows Aya, the cowboy-hatted katana fighter at the center of OneChanbara, alongside her younger sister Saki and the mysterious Reiko. Their story takes place amid another wave of zombies and mutant enemies, mixing family conflict, monster-hunting melodrama, and the series' B-movie style. The premise remains direct: enter a compact area, clear advancing enemies, find the route forward, and confront a larger threat at the end of a mission.

Combat is fast, close-range hack-and-slash rather than survival horror. Aya and the other fighters slice through crowds with swords and character-specific attacks, while timing strikes can extend the Cool Combo system for stronger, more rewarding chains. The game also keeps the series' distinctive blood mechanics. Repeated hits cover a blade in gore, reducing its effectiveness and potentially leaving it stuck, so players must clean the weapon before that buildup becomes a serious liability.

A separate Blood Lust gauge changes the risk and rhythm of a battle. Defeating enemies fills the meter, and a full gauge can send a character into a more powerful frenzy that also drains health. Items dropped by defeated foes and larger stage statues help the player recover and end that state. These systems give its straightforward button-driven action a layer of management: attacking recklessly can be useful, but a neglected weapon or uncontrolled frenzy can turn a crowded encounter against the player.

Zombie Hunters 2 broadens the playable cast and lets players select a pair of characters to switch between during play. Each main fighter brings different attacks and tools, such as Aya's knives, helping the player adapt to different enemy groups. It also includes returning characters Riho and Makoto, plus Hana and Kiku from another D3 Simple 2000 game, Dragon Sisters. Rather than functioning solely as costumes, these additional characters have their own moves and story variations, with some unlocked through progress, quests, or compatible save data.

The package is organized around more than its story stages. Survival-style arena challenges put the emphasis on lasting against waves of enemies, while quests provide additional objectives and unlockable content. That structure suits the game's arcade-minded scale: missions are short, the presentation is unapologetically rough-edged, and replay value comes from mastering combat, trying other characters, and pursuing extras. For players exploring the PlayStation 2 era of OneChanbara, Zombie Hunters 2 is the enhanced follow-up that develops the first European release's blood-soaked action into a broader, character-driven sequel.
