About
Phantom of Inferno for PlayStation 2 is a Japanese visual novel released on May 22, 2003. Developed by Nitroplus from a scenario by Gen Urobuchi and published by ZEROSYSTEM under the PrincessSoft label, it is the console port of Nitroplus's earlier Phantom -PHANTOM OF INFERNO-. This PS2 edition belongs to the original release lineage rather than the later Xbox 360 remake or its subsequent PC version, presenting the story as a branching crime thriller told through text, character artwork, music, and scripted scenes.
The story begins when Reiji Azuma, a Japanese visitor in the United States, witnesses an assassination and is seized by Inferno, a powerful criminal organization. Stripped of his previous memories, he is given the codename Zwei and forced to choose between becoming an assassin or dying. His training is overseen by Ein, the organization’s formidable operative known as Phantom. The premise turns the player’s perspective toward survival inside an organization built on control, secrecy, and shifting loyalties.
Play proceeds in the visual-novel form: the narrative advances through conversations and dramatic scenes, while choices at key moments determine how Reiji responds to the people and dangers around him. Decisions do more than change isolated dialogue. They guide the story onto interconnected routes and toward different conclusions, so player choices shape alliances, relationships, and the sequence in which major events unfold. The original structure is organized into chapters, encouraging repeat play to see alternative paths through the same criminal underworld.
Ein is central to the game’s opening conflict, but Phantom of Inferno also brings Reiji into contact with figures such as the calculating Inferno executive Claudia McCunnen and Cal Devens, a young girl whose life becomes entangled with the organization. The cast’s shifting identities are echoed in the German-number codenames used by its assassins: Zwei is “two,” Ein is “one,” and Cal is eventually associated with Drei, or “three.” Their stories place personal attachment and attempts to escape beside missions, betrayals, and rival criminal interests.
The PlayStation 2 release followed the DVD-VIDEO GAME edition, which itself came after the original 2000 PC game. It arrived in Japan with the PS2’s distinct product presentation and is not the same release as the later Phantom INTEGRATION PC update, which collected material associated with the DVD and PS2 versions, nor the 2012 Xbox 360 remake with redesigned visuals. Those separate editions share the underlying premise, but their release dates, platforms, and presentation should not be confused with this 2003 PlayStation 2 game.
As an early Nitroplus work, Phantom of Inferno stands as a visual novel focused on branching drama rather than real-time action. Its suspense comes from reading Reiji’s difficult situation, weighing choices, and following the consequences through multiple routes and endings. For players exploring the PlayStation 2 library, it offers a console version of a formative Nitroplus story: an interactive tale of identity, criminal power, and the uneasy bond between a newly made assassin and the person assigned to train him.
