About
Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand for PlayStation 2 is a Japanese action RPG released by Taito on March 30, 2006. Developed by Access under license from Nihon Falcom, it revisits the fifth numbered Ys adventure, which first appeared on Super Famicom in 1995. This PS2 edition is not a simple port: it reworks the earlier game into a three-dimensional adventure while keeping red-haired traveler Adol Christin and the legend of Kefin, a fabled city hidden beyond the desert.
The journey begins when Adol arrives in the busy port town of Sandria after hearing tales of the lost city. His pursuit of the rumor brings him into contact with merchant Dorman, who asks him to investigate Kefin, as well as residents and travelers whose lives are tied to the mystery. Adol’s longtime companion Dogi joins the PS2 version, while characters including Niena, the young Terra, alchemy expert Marsha, and missing adventurer Stan give the investigation a wider cast. The story moves from Sandria toward the dangerous land associated with the vanished kingdom.
Exploration is presented from a raised, behind-the-character quarter view instead of the original Super Famicom game’s top-down perspective. Adol travels through settlements and outdoor areas, enters ruins and hostile territory, speaks with characters, and searches for the next lead on Kefin. The switch to polygonal 3D makes elevation and the position of nearby platforms, enemies, and obstacles central to reading an area, supporting a remake designed around clearer spatial movement.
Combat centers on direct sword action, including jumping attacks, downward strikes, evasive jumps, and shield defense. The PS2 remake also builds its battles around Renstone Combos: Adol links sword attacks with alchemy magic equipped to his weapon to extend an assault. Its elemental magic is organized around fire, water, wind, and earth, with several spells and power levels for each attribute. These abilities do more than damage opponents, since elemental magic can also be used against environmental devices and puzzle-like obstacles during exploration.
The PlayStation 2 release expands and rearranges ideas from Ys V rather than reproducing the Super Famicom version scene for scene. It adds a reworked scenario, a new visual approach, revised action systems, and bonus connections for owners of Taito’s PS2 Ys III and Ys IV remakes; a cleared save can also unlock a gallery, and certain conditions reveal an extra dungeon inspired by Ys V Expert. As a late entry in Taito’s PS2 adaptations of Falcom games, Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand offers a distinct 2006 interpretation of Adol’s desert-bound adventure.
