About
Ys III: Wanderers from Ys is the 2005 Japanese PlayStation 2 version of Nihon Falcom’s third Ys adventure, developed by Access and published by Taito. Released on March 24, 2005, it revisits the 1989 action role-playing game at the center of one of the series’ most distinctive early chapters. Rather than simply representing every version of Ys III, this PS2 release is a later console adaptation with its own presentation and production credits.
The story follows red-haired adventurer Adol Christin and his longtime companion Dogi as they arrive in Dogi’s hometown of Redmont. Trouble has spread through the Felghana region, with the nearby Valestein Castle and its forces looming over the community. Adol becomes involved in the search for ancient statues whose history is tied to a powerful evil, while friends including Elena and her brother Chester are drawn into the conflict. The journey carries the pair from the town and its surrounding wilderness into ruins, caverns, mountain areas and the enemy stronghold.
Wanderers from Ys changes the perspective established by the first two Ys games. Instead of their top-down view and contact-based combat, it presents Adol’s quest as a side-scrolling action RPG. Players guide him through horizontal stages, jump across hazards and use a dedicated attack button to strike enemies with his sword. Experience, equipment, shops and magical rings remain central to progression, so exploration and character improvement still accompany the faster, platform-oriented action.
The side-view approach gives Felghana a different rhythm from the earlier Ys adventures. Combat requires players to judge distance, enemy patterns and the timing of sword swings, while dungeons combine hostile creatures with vertical routes and environmental obstacles. Stronger weapons and protective gear help Adol face increasingly dangerous areas, and the game’s RPG systems reward continued fighting and preparation without abandoning its action focus.
This PlayStation 2 release preserves the game’s place in the long-running Ys history while arriving in the same year that Falcom released the separate remake Ys: The Oath in Felghana for Windows. The two releases should not be confused: Wanderers from Ys is the PS2 adaptation of the original side-scrolling Ys III, whereas The Oath in Felghana reworks the story and gameplay in a different 3D action-RPG form. For players exploring the series’ many versions, the Taito-published PS2 game offers a later look at the original third adventure and its unusual direction for Adol’s early travels.
Music is another enduring part of Ys III’s identity. The original game’s score was composed by Mieko Ishikawa, with additional X68000 material associated with Masaaki Kawai; across the game’s release history, its themes have been arranged in several forms. Alongside Redmont, Felghana and Adol’s confrontation with its ancient threat, that musical legacy helps explain why Wanderers from Ys remains a notable branch of the Ys catalogue.
