About

WWE SmackDown! Shut Your Mouth for PlayStation 2 is a 2002 professional-wrestling game developed by Yuke’s and published by THQ. It is the fourth entry in the PlayStation-based SmackDown! series, following WWF SmackDown! Just Bring It and arriving during WWE’s change from the WWF name. Built around the company’s television roster and presentation of the period, the game lets players step into the ring as established Superstars or build a competitor of their own. In Japan, the same PS2 game was released as Exciting Pro Wrestling 4.

Matches use the series’ fast, accessible wrestling system. Players combine strikes, grapples, Irish whips, running attacks, aerial moves and ring-positioning to wear down an opponent, then pursue a pinfall, submission, count-out or the stipulation required by the selected match. Timing matters on defense as well, since reversals can interrupt an opponent’s attack and swing the momentum of a bout. The game supports one or two players locally, so exhibition cards can be contested against the computer or another player on the same console.

The roster reflects WWE’s early-2000s transition, mixing major names from Raw and SmackDown! with wrestlers associated with the era’s changing landscape. The playable lineup includes performers such as The Rock, Triple H, Kurt Angle, Brock Lesnar, Booker T, Rob Van Dam and Hollywood Hulk Hogan, while the nWo is part of the game’s Season material. Full character entrances, arena lighting, entrance videos and licensed or WWE-produced theme music aim to reproduce the walk to the ring as well as the match itself. Commentary from Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler and ring introductions by Howard Finkel add to that broadcast-style framing.

Season mode is the heart of WWE SmackDown! Shut Your Mouth. Its two in-game years use WWE’s brand-extension setting, with Ric Flair’s Raw and Vince McMahon’s SmackDown! functioning as separate destinations. After a draft, a wrestler is scheduled through weekly television shows and monthly pay-per-views, with lower-rated or created competitors initially able to work through Sunday Night HEAT before reaching the main programs. Story developments draw on WWE angles from the preceding year, allowing the player to progress through rivalries, matches and championship pursuits instead of simply playing disconnected exhibitions.

Championship competition is tied to that season structure rather than treated as a separate exhibition prize chase. The game includes the WWE Undisputed, Intercontinental, European, Tag Team, Cruiserweight and Hardcore championships, and season progress also unlocks content such as alternate costumes, extra movesets and arenas. Its arenas cover Raw, SmackDown! and Heat as well as several pay-per-view settings drawn from the 2001 and 2002 WWE calendar, giving players a range of venues for regular matches and special events.

Outside the ring, backstage spaces make the PS2 edition more than a sequence of standard bouts. Certain areas allow fighting beyond the ropes, and some settings include large climbable structures that can be used for high-risk attacks. The Undertaker’s motorcycle can also be ridden in applicable match or backstage situations. These environmental touches complement a selection of match rules and give confrontations a more theatrical WWE feel without changing the game’s focus on grappling, reversals and finishing moves.

Create-A-Superstar expands the roster with a detailed custom wrestler tool. Players can alter a new competitor’s appearance and animation choices, then assign movesets assembled from a wide range of WWE-inspired techniques. That created wrestler can be brought into the Season mode alongside the licensed cast, making the long-form campaign useful for players who want to guide an original character through the brand split. As the bridge between Just Bring It and 2003’s WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain, Shut Your Mouth captures a specific PS2-era WWE lineup and the first main-series SmackDown! game released under the WWE banner.
