About

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is a 2002 third-person action-adventure for PlayStation 2, developed by Surreal Software and published by Black Label Games. It adapts J. R. R. Tolkien’s first Lord of the Rings novel rather than Peter Jackson’s film, an important distinction from Electronic Arts’ movie-based games of the period. The result offers a version of Middle-earth shaped by the book’s characters, places, dialogue, and detours, while telling the opening stage of Frodo Baggins’ journey with the One Ring.

The adventure follows Frodo after Gandalf explains the Ring’s history and the danger posed by Sauron. Accompanied early by Sam, Merry, and Pippin, he leaves the Shire and travels through locations that many screen adaptations omit or condense. The Old Forest, Old Man Willow, Tom Bombadil, Goldberry, and the Barrow-downs all appear before the party reaches Bree. That literary focus gives the game a notably different rhythm and cast from the contemporary film tie-ins, even though it arrived during the same wave of renewed interest in Tolkien’s world.

Players alternate between three protagonists as the story advances: Frodo, Aragorn, and Gandalf. Each has a separate role in both exploration and combat. Frodo can jump, sneak, and move along ledges, Aragorn is the most direct sword fighter, and Gandalf combines staff-and-sword combat with spells such as healing and lightning. Their distinct abilities shape the objectives in individual chapters, so the game is not simply one character carrying the entire quest from beginning to end.

Frodo’s use of the One Ring is one of the game’s central systems. Wearing it can make him invisible, but it also drains a purity meter as Sauron’s attention closes in. Leaving the Ring on for too long ends the attempt, turning a familiar piece of Tolkien lore into a practical risk during play. Gandalf manages a magical spirit meter that can be restored with miruvor, while health items and quest objects support the party’s progress through its linear series of environments.

The PlayStation 2 game moves from the Shire toward Rivendell through Bree and Weathertop, then continues with the formation of the Fellowship, the failed crossing of Caradhras, and the descent into Moria. Lothlórien and the Anduin also feature as the plot approaches Amon Hen. Combat against orcs and other dangers is mixed with navigation, switches, objects to move, and character-specific tasks. The journey generally follows the novel’s broad route, though it also creates action sequences and alters some events for a self-contained game campaign.

Surreal Software built the PS2 version separately from WXP’s Xbox release, while Pocket Studios produced a substantially different Game Boy Advance game. The PS2 and Windows editions share their own development lineage and are best understood as companion versions, not simple copies of the Xbox game. This matters because platform-specific features and level details vary across the 2002 releases; the PS2 entry is the Surreal Software action-adventure associated with this database record.

The game’s presentation leans into the written source through book-derived dialogue and characters, making it an unusual artifact of the early 2000s Lord of the Rings boom. Rather than use the film cast or reproduce New Line’s designs, it presents its own visual interpretation of Middle-earth under Vivendi’s literary license. Voice performances, chapter-like progression, and the opportunity to see Bombadil and other novel material give dedicated readers a reason to explore this alternate adaptation.

Critical reception was mixed. Reviewers often recognized the game’s commitment to Tolkien’s novel and its unusual selection of locations, while criticizing repetitive combat, camera and control issues, and technical roughness. Even so, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring remains historically distinctive on PS2: a book-focused adaptation released alongside far more famous film-based games, and a playable tour through parts of the Fellowship’s route that were rarely represented in mainstream console games.
