About

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows - Amazing Allies Edition brings Marvel's symbiote crisis to PlayStation 2 in a form built around tight, side-scrolling action. Developed by Amaze Entertainment and published by Activision, this is not the open-world Web of Shadows released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and PC. Instead, it is the PS2 companion to the PSP edition: a 2.5D beat 'em up that puts Spider-Man on a more focused path through a Manhattan overwhelmed by Venom's spreading symbiote infection.

The city is under quarantine, the streets are crawling with infected enemies, and Spider-Man is once again carrying the black suit. Nick Fury sends him after components for a sonic generator capable of countering the invasion, setting off a campaign of brawls, boss encounters, and comic-book crises. The stakes remain recognizably Web of Shadows, but the route through them is its own one, with Spider-Man confronting figures including Shocker, Kraven the Hunter, Rhino, Luke Cage, the Tinkerer, Jackal, Jessica Drew, Black Cat, and Venom.

Rather than swing freely across a fully 3D Manhattan, Spider-Man moves through 2.5D stages with side-view combat and platforming. He punches, kicks, jumps, wall-climbs, and fires webs while moving through streets, sewers, laboratories, and other danger zones. That change gives this version a brisk arcade-like rhythm: each area is a contained fight to clear, a traversal challenge to cross, or a confrontation with a villain at the end of the route.

The red-and-blue suit and the symbiote black suit can be switched during play, and the choice is more than a cosmetic one. The classic suit favors quicker movement and faster attacks, while the black suit leans into heavier, more forceful offense. Both have their own upgrades, including new combos and health improvements, so the game encourages players to make use of two distinct sides of Spider-Man rather than treating the black suit as a simple visual reward. Certain obstacles also make that contrast practical, such as weak walls that require the black suit's strength to break through.

Amazing Allies Edition puts special weight on its ally system. Spider-Man meets a broad group of Marvel heroes and villains across the campaign, and allies can be summoned to help in battle. Consumable power-ups further support the action, giving this version a team-oriented identity that fits its subtitle. The appeal is in seeing Spider-Man's crisis pull unlikely characters into the same fight, then deciding how he responds when their priorities collide with his own.

Choices arrive through dialogue trees instead of the presentation used by the larger-console game. Spider-Man's answers can come across as respectful, hostile, or neutral, and those responses award upgrade points to the red suit, the black suit, or both. The decisions also shape story developments, linking the suit system to Peter Parker's behavior as the symbiote's influence grows. It is a compact way to make the player's attitude matter while keeping the focus on forward momentum and combat.

That makes this PS2 release a notably different branch of the 2008 Web of Shadows family. The PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, and PC version is a third-person open-world action game, while the Nintendo DS game uses a separate exploration-driven, Metroidvania-style structure. Amazing Allies Edition shares the central symbiote invasion, suit switching, choices, and ally concept, but reworks them for a dedicated side-scrolling adventure. It should be approached as its own Spider-Man game rather than as a scaled-down copy of the main console release.

For players who enjoy the PlayStation 2 era's straightforward superhero brawlers, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows - Amazing Allies Edition offers a focused alternative: two suits with different combat roles, a crowd of recognizable Marvel characters, and a campaign built around stopping a citywide symbiote threat. Its 2.5D format trades free-roaming for immediate stage-by-stage action, making it a distinct piece of Spider-Man game history and the version to seek out for its unusual blend of suit choices, allies, and side-scrolling combat.
