About
WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain is a professional wrestling game developed by Yuke's and published by THQ for PlayStation 2. Released in North America in October 2003, it follows WWE SmackDown! Shut Your Mouth and serves as the final entry in that WWE SmackDown! series before WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw.
Matches combine the series' quick arcade-like pace with a deeper grappling system. Wrestlers have individual ratings for areas such as strength, speed, endurance, technique, and submission ability, while body-damage displays and submission meters make it important to wear down specific parts of an opponent.
The game offers a large lineup drawn from WWE's 2002–03 era, including active Superstars and WWE Legends. Its roster also includes early game appearances for John Cena, Batista, and Rey Mysterio, alongside names such as Brock Lesnar, Goldberg, The Rock, and Stone Cold Steve Austin.
A wide assortment of match rules lets players stage standard singles and tag bouts as well as specialty contests. Elimination Chamber, First Blood, Bra and Panties, Hell in a Cell, TLC, ladder, cage, Iron Man, and Three Stages of Hell matches are among the available options.
Season Mode places a selected wrestler or created Superstar in storylines across Raw and SmackDown!, with backstage conversations, title pursuits, brand changes, and pay-per-view rivalries. Progress can be tracked through seasonal statistics, and money earned during play can be used to improve created wrestlers or unlock additional content.
Create-a-Superstar tools allow players to make their own WWE character and take that character through the season. Presentation additions such as new camera angles, crowd detail, animations, and wrestler voice work help frame the televised wrestling action on the PlayStation 2.
