About

Sengoku Basara 2 is Capcom's 2006 PlayStation 2 action game and the direct sequel to the original Sengoku Basara. Released in Japan on July 27, 2006, it returns to a stylized version of Japan's Sengoku era, turning famous warlords and regional leaders into brightly designed, highly individualized action heroes. Rather than aiming for a restrained historical simulation, the game treats its source period as the basis for a fast, theatrical adventure full of rivalries, exaggerated weapons, and dramatic battlefield encounters. Capcom both developed and published this PS2 release, which remains a distinctly Japanese entry in the series.

The game builds its campaign around the struggle to unify a fractured Japan. Players choose a warrior and enter battles against opposing armies, cutting through groups of rank-and-file soldiers before confronting named generals. Historical figures such as Date Masamune, Sanada Yukimura, Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Maeda Keiji are reimagined with deliberately larger-than-life personalities, combat styles, and visual identities. That creative approach gives the action game a colorful sense of momentum: familiar names from the period are present, but their roles and relationships are designed for spectacle rather than strict biography.

At its core, Sengoku Basara 2 is a hack-and-slash game centered on close-range combat, crowd control, and character-specific techniques. Each playable fighter has a different weapon, move set, and rhythm, encouraging players to learn how a particular character deals with groups, creates openings, and handles powerful commanders. Stages place the player amid busy battlefield scenes, where success depends on moving from encounter to encounter while keeping pressure on enemy forces. The design emphasizes immediate, expressive action and makes the choice of character a major part of how each playthrough feels.

The returning Conquest mode lets a selected character challenge rival generals' armies in an attempt to bring the country under one banner. It provides a broad route through the game's conflicts and supports repeat play with different warriors. Free Battle also returns for players who want to revisit battles outside that progression. Alongside those modes, Sengoku Basara 2 introduced a dedicated Story Mode. Each playable character receives an individual scenario made up of five or six chapters, giving its cast more room for character-focused situations and changing the context around the battles.

Capcom expanded the roster for this sequel with six new playable characters, bringing the total to 22. Chosokabe Motochika and Mori Motonari, who had appeared as enemy generals in the first game, are among the additions now available to play. Maeda Keiji also joined the battle as a new character, adding to the sequel's emphasis on broadening the cast and presenting the setting through contrasting personalities. With different stories, weapons, and combat approaches distributed across the roster, the game is structured to reward experimentation instead of treating one character as the only route through its content.

Sengoku Basara 2 sits at an important point in the early history of Capcom's Sengoku Basara franchise. It arrived one year after the first PS2 game and preceded the 2007 expansion Sengoku Basara 2 Heroes, which added further content and later appeared in a Wii double pack with the original sequel. The base game itself is not the same release as Heroes: this 2006 PS2 title is the core sequel, while Heroes is a subsequent expansion. For players exploring Capcom's energetic interpretation of the Warring States period, Sengoku Basara 2 offers the series' early mix of character-driven scenarios, conquest-focused replayability, and deliberately over-the-top action.
