About

Vietcong: Purple Haze for PlayStation 2 is a tactical first-person shooter released in 2004 by Gathering. Ported by Coyote Developments from the PC series created by Pterodon and Illusion Softworks, it brings the Vietnam War setting of Vietcong to Sony’s console as a complete package. Rather than a separate sequel, Purple Haze combines the content of the original 2003 Vietcong and its 2004 Fist Alpha expansion, making this the first and only console release of those campaigns.

The main Vietcong campaign follows U.S. Army Special Forces Sergeant First Class Steve R. Hawkins during 1967. Assigned to the isolated Nui Pek camp near the Cambodian border in South Vietnam, Hawkins works with an A-Team on operations against Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces. Missions move between dense jungle, villages, underground tunnel networks and defended positions, framing the player’s advance around military objectives such as reconnaissance, recovering personnel, disrupting enemy resources and surviving attacks on the base.

Purple Haze places an emphasis on deliberate movement and the vulnerability of a soldier operating in difficult terrain. Players carry period weapons, aim through their sights, and can crouch or go prone to improve control and use cover. Equipment may be changed before an operation and weapons found in the field can replace a current loadout. Injuries are handled with bandages or the help of a medic rather than conventional health pickups, so choosing a moment to recover can be as important as deciding when to press forward.

Hawkins is normally accompanied by computer-controlled members of his Special Forces team. Each has a practical role: a point man can help spot threats and warn of traps, while other squadmates provide supporting fire, ammunition or medical assistance. General orders let the player direct the group to advance, attack or fall back, and individual teammates can be summoned when their particular skill is needed. This squad structure distinguishes the game from a lone-soldier shooter while keeping the player responsible for navigating its ambushes and objectives.

The Fist Alpha material broadens the package with a prequel campaign set several months before the events starring Hawkins. Its protagonist is Sergeant First Class Douglas Warren, who serves with many of the same people at Nui Pek before the original campaign begins. The paired stories give Purple Haze a larger view of the unit and its setting without asking PlayStation 2 players to own an expansion separately. The compilation format was especially important on consoles, where the original game and Fist Alpha were not issued as individual releases.

Alongside the campaigns, Vietcong: Purple Haze includes a Quick Fight option for standalone combat scenarios. Players can choose a map, equipment and opposing force, with more selections unlocked through campaign progress; the mode also permits taking the Viet Cong side in selected encounters. The PlayStation 2 edition supports one player locally and was released with online multiplayer capabilities, offering competitive modes built around individual and team combat. As a console adaptation of a PC tactical shooter, Vietcong: Purple Haze remains a distinct PlayStation 2 entry in the series because it preserves both major early Vietcong campaigns in one release.
