About
Urban Chaos: Riot Response for PlayStation 2 is a first-person shooter from Rocksteady Studios, published by Eidos Interactive in 2006. Set in the troubled Franklin City, it casts the player as Nick Mason, an officer in the newly formed T-Zero riot-response unit. The city has been seized by the Burners, a violent gang whose attacks threaten civilians, police, medics, and firefighters. Mason's missions turn that crisis into a series of urgent urban operations built around clearing hostile territory and protecting the people caught in it.
The campaign is played from a first-person viewpoint and moves through city locations under siege, including a police station and fire-filled interiors. Mason faces Burners armed with firearms as well as close-range weapons and incendiaries, so encounters demand quick positioning as much as direct fire. The gang's hockey masks, cleavers, Molotov cocktails, and chainsaws give the action a deliberately heightened street-war atmosphere, while the mission objectives keep the focus on restoring order instead of simply reaching an exit.
A defining piece of T-Zero equipment is Mason's riot shield. Raising it lets him absorb frontal attacks and creates a useful pause in a firefight, but he cannot use a firearm while sheltering behind it. The same shield can be used at close range, making it valuable when an enemy rushes in. This trade-off gives Urban Chaos: Riot Response on PS2 a distinct rhythm: advance under cover, choose an opening, then lower the shield to deal with the immediate threat.
Missions also bring Mason into contact with Franklin City's emergency services. Firefighters can tackle burning obstacles, paramedics can assist wounded people and restore Mason's health, and police support the effort in the field. Players can direct these allies in appropriate situations, such as telling them to follow or take cover. Fires are more than scenery: smoke can reduce visibility, and the campaign's unlockable thermal-breather equipment helps Mason work through hazardous, smoke-filled areas.
The game rewards replaying missions and approaching their challenges in different ways. Medals are earned for tasks such as headshots, collecting gang masks, and using Mason's Taser to arrest opponents rather than kill them. Those medals open additional weapons and protective equipment. Capturing gang leaders is another important objective, because it can unlock timed emergency missions. The result is a single-player structure that encourages players to revisit completed levels to improve their performance or pursue challenges they missed.
Urban Chaos: Riot Response arrived on PlayStation 2 in Europe in May 2006 and reached North America the following month; an Xbox version was released alongside it. The project had previously been shown under the names Roll Call and Zero Tolerance before adopting its final title. The PS2 release is centered on Mason's single-player campaign, while the Xbox edition also included online and System Link multiplayer for up to eight players. For players looking for a console shooter that combines riot-shield defense, nonlethal arrests, rescue objectives, and explosive city missions, Urban Chaos: Riot Response remains a distinctive mid-2000s PS2 action game.
