About
Togainu no Chi: True Blood is a Japanese PlayStation 2 visual novel released on May 29, 2008. Published by Kadokawa Shoten, it revisits Nitro+CHiRAL's 2005 PC boys' love adventure in a console edition adapted with HuneX. The story takes place after a devastating third world war has split Japan between rival powers. In the ruined former Tokyo district of Toshima, the criminal organization Vischio presides over a deadly underground contest called Igura, creating a bleak backdrop for a branching tale of survival, secrets, and human relationships.
Its protagonist, Akira, is an accomplished competitor in the regulated street-fighting game Bl@ster. When he is framed for murder and imprisoned, two mysterious visitors offer a way out: enter Igura, reach its unbeaten champion Il Re, and destroy Vischio from within. Akira is sent into Toshima with little choice but to accept. The city is dangerous even outside the contest, and the narrative follows his efforts to stay alive, learn why he was selected, and uncover the forces shaping Igura.
Igura gives the story its central goal and much of its tension. Participants carry tags modeled on playing cards, defeating rivals to collect the combinations needed to earn a challenge against Il Re. Lower-value tags can be exchanged in neutral areas for necessities, while the valuable hands required for advancement make every confrontation consequential. The rules demand witnesses and define when a fight ends, but Toshima is far from a safe or orderly place. A performance-enhancing drug called Rein also affects the balance of power, tying the tournament to Vischio's control of the city.
Rather than playing as an action game, Togainu no Chi: True Blood advances through reading scenes and choosing responses at key moments. Those decisions guide Akira through different character routes and endings, so the player gradually sees the conflict from several emotional angles. Akira's childhood friend Keisuke, the agile fighter Rin, the feared swordsman Shiki, information broker Motomi, and the masked Vischio official Arbitro are among the figures whose motivations shape the journey. The game is a single-player experience, with its branching structure encouraging repeat play to pursue other outcomes.
True Blood was designed specifically as a PS2 expansion of the original Windows game. Its console adaptation removes the original adult content while adding new events, artwork, voice performances, and the new route character Yukihito, a former Bl@ster fighter who has entered Igura with Touya's group. These additions make it more than a straight platform conversion: the PS2 edition offers material unavailable in the initial release while keeping Akira and Toshima at the center. It was released in Japan in both standard and limited editions and carries Japanese-language presentation.
The game belongs to Nitro+CHiRAL's line of boys' love visual novels, but its setting leans into postwar dystopia and violent tournament fiction rather than everyday romance. Its enduring cast and dystopian premise later supported manga, prose, drama CD, and animated adaptations. A PSP version, Togainu no Chi: True Blood Portable, followed in 2010, and the True Blood material was later revisited on other platforms. For PS2 players, this edition remains the important console version that expanded the original 2005 visual novel with its own route, scenes, and presentation.
