About

Spider-Man 3 on PlayStation 2 is Vicarious Visions’ own 2007 take on the movie-era web-slinger, built as a third-person action adventure for one player. It sends Peter Parker across a free-roaming New York City as the pressure of hero work, Harry Osborn’s vendetta, Eddie Brock’s resentment, and the arrival of an alien symbiote converge. The movie’s central threats—New Goblin, Sandman, and Venom—anchor the campaign, but this PS2 edition also makes room for comic-book enemies and side stories that give its version of the adventure a different shape from the PS3 and Xbox 360 game.

Swing between buildings, stick to walls, race through streets, and drop into battles as Spider-Man answers the city’s calls for help. Missions move the story forward while combat tours, races, and other activities offer reasons to keep patrolling between major confrontations. Random radio transmissions can present optional trouble around town, putting the choice to intervene in the player’s hands. Manhattan is the hub, with locations such as subway tunnels and sewers taking the action below the skyline when the hunt demands it.

The defining PS2 mechanic is the choice between Spider-Man’s red-and-blue suit and the black symbiote suit once it becomes available. The standard suit keeps Peter in his familiar heroic role, while the black suit boosts his aggression and power. Changing suits is part of the action rather than a simple cosmetic selection, and relying on the symbiote for too long is dangerous: Peter must shed it before its corruption overwhelms him. Afterward, a cooldown keeps the black suit off limits for a time, turning its strength into something to manage instead of a permanent upgrade.

Combat stays close to the ground and emphasizes punches, kicks, webs, combos, finishers, and quick-time sequences. As Peter earns Hero Points through story progress and city activities, those points can be spent on upgrades for the red-and-blue suit. The result is a version of Spider-Man 3 where building up ordinary Spider-Man matters as much as unleashing the symbiote. Whether clearing enemies from a street or enduring a boss encounter, the game asks players to decide when raw black-suit force is worth the risk.

The campaign reaches beyond the film’s familiar rivalry. Spider-Man confronts the Lizard and crosses paths with Kraven the Hunter, while an investigation involving Dr. Michael Morbius and Shriek adds a supernatural detour unique to this branch of the game. Gang threats including the H-Bombers and the Waste Tribe keep the city unsettled, and missions weave those conflicts around Peter’s escalating personal problems. That expanded roster gives PS2 players encounters they will not find in the same form in the PS3, Xbox 360, Game Boy Advance, or Nintendo DS releases.

Story scenes and action set pieces carry Peter from rescues and investigations to battles against towering movie villains. Sandman’s shifting strength calls for more than a simple brawl, while the black suit changes the emotional stakes of Peter’s fight with crime. The road to Venom brings Eddie Brock’s plot against Spider-Man together with the symbiote’s growing influence, and Harry’s role as New Goblin brings the conflict with Peter’s old friend to a head. The game uses these familiar elements to tell its own PS2-era version of the Spider-Man 3 story.

Spider-Man 3 is a period piece from the final years of the PlayStation 2, but it remains a substantial superhero outing for fans of the Sam Raimi films and Marvel’s broader villain gallery. Its open-city patrols, manual Hero Point upgrades, optional emergencies, and high-risk suit switching create a different rhythm from the newer-console release. For players looking to revisit the film trilogy’s game tie-ins, this PS2 edition stands as a distinct Vicarious Visions adventure: a chance to web-swing through New York, take on a varied rogues’ gallery, and learn that the most powerful suit may also be the hardest one to control.
