About

TY the Tasmanian Tiger for PlayStation 2 is Krome Studios' 2002 3D platform adventure, published by EA Games. This is the first game in the series, not the later Bush Rescue or Night of the Quinkan sequels, and it casts players as Ty, an orphaned Tasmanian tiger who protects the fictional Southern Rivers region. Its Australian-inspired landscapes, animal characters, and paired boomerangs give the PS2 game a distinct identity within the era's mascot platformers. The North American PlayStation 2 release arrived in October 2002, with the game also released for GameCube and Xbox.

Ty's journey begins when the spirit Nandu Gili reveals what happened to his family. Boss Cass, a cassowary determined to seize mystical talismans, used the Dreaming to imprison the region's mammal population, including Ty's parents. With help from his cockatoo friend Maurie and inventor Julius the koala, Ty sets out to recover the scattered talismans before Cass can complete his plan. The story carries the player from the Rainbow Cliffs hub into stylized takes on the outback, rainforest, snowfields, coast, and reef, meeting characters such as Shazza the dingo, Ranger Ken, Rex the platypus, and the bilbies who raised Ty.

The core of the PlayStation 2 game is exploratory third-person platforming. Ty runs, jumps, bites enemies, swims, and later dives underwater while searching each stage for Thunder Eggs, the energy source needed for Julius's Talisman Machine. Rainbow Cliffs is divided into zones that link to individual levels, and collecting enough Eggs opens the way to talisman encounters and boss battles. Thunder Eggs can be found along a stage route, earned by helping local characters, awarded for freeing bilbies, or gained through time-attack challenges that become available after a level has been completed.

Boomerangs are Ty's defining tools as well as his chief defense. He starts with simple wooden rangs, then expands the collection by bringing Golden Cogs to Julius and by progressing through the adventure. Different techno-rangs have practical uses beyond combat, while elemental sets such as the fire-based Flamerangs, ice-oriented Frostyrangs, and electrical Zappyrangs help Ty overcome particular obstacles and reach new areas. After meeting Rex, Ty can also use Aquarangs underwater. This gradual equipment growth gives the collectible hunt a purpose: optional routes and stage objectives feed directly into fresh traversal options and attacks.

The campaign also changes pace with races, character tasks, environmental puzzles, and boss confrontations. Health is represented by a small set of units, checkpoints soften the penalty for a fall or enemy attack, and a lost life returns Ty to the last checkpoint. The structure makes revisiting a level worthwhile because its Thunder Eggs are tied to several different activities rather than a single finish-line objective. Across the adventure, Ty can lend a hand to the residents of Southern Rivers while pursuing Cass's talismans and uncovering more of the conflict that separated him from his parents.

Krome's original Ty the Tasmanian Tiger became the foundation for a broader series, followed on PS2 by Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 2: Bush Rescue and Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 3: Night of the Quinkan. The 2002 PlayStation 2 edition remains the original chapter: a single-player platformer built around Rainbow Cliffs, Thunder Egg collection, and Ty's increasingly versatile boomerangs. Later HD remasters brought the first game to modern platforms, but they are separate releases from this PS2 version and its early-2000s console presentation.
