About
The X-Files: Resist or Serve is a PlayStation 2 survival-horror adventure developed by Black Ops Entertainment and published by Vivendi Universal Games in North America in March 2004. Built from the world of the television series, it puts FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully back on an unexplained case during the show’s seventh-season period. Rather than adapting a single broadcast episode, the game presents an original conspiracy story in the style of three connected lost episodes, mixing a murder investigation, paranormal threats, and the long-running alien mythology associated with The X-Files.
The case begins in Red Falls, Colorado, where the disappearance and return of twin sisters coincides with a string of disturbing deaths. Mulder and Scully are sent to determine what happened, but the investigation soon points beyond a local crime. Strange sightings, reanimated victims, covert experiments, and evidence connected to an alien artifact turn the agents’ search into a larger mystery. The story eventually carries its characters from the American investigation to Tunguska, Russia, giving the game a link to familiar corners of the series’ conspiracy narrative without requiring players to have followed every television episode.
Players choose either Mulder or Scully, then work through the game’s three episodes, titled “Renascence,” “Resonance,” and “Reckoning.” Their routes share the central plot but do not simply substitute one character model for the other: the agents can encounter different scenes, obstacles, and supporting characters. This structure gives the two protagonists distinct perspectives on the same investigation. Their case notes also collect clues and background information, reinforcing the detective angle as players follow leads, examine locations, and piece together the connections between people, organizations, and the artifact.
Resist or Serve uses a third-person survival-horror format with fixed camera views that change as the player enters new rooms and areas. Exploration is central to progress. Ammunition, healing items, and key objects are found in the environment or recovered from enemies, while an inventory keeps essential supplies available for later use. Firearms and other defensive tools are part of the arsenal, and a flashlight can help locate items as well as deal with nearby threats. Puzzles, locked routes, and boss encounters break up the investigation, so advancement depends on searching carefully as much as on surviving combat.
The two playable agents also suit different parts of the premise. Mulder’s path emphasizes his drive to pursue the inexplicable, while Scully’s scientific background is reflected in moments involving examination and antidote-making. The campaign includes appearances by familiar X-Files figures such as Walter Skinner, the Lone Gunmen, Alex Krycek, the Smoking Man, and Marita Covarrubias. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson returned to voice Mulder and Scully, joined by members of the show’s cast for several supporting roles. Music associated with the series, including work by Mark Snow, helps carry the TV program’s atmosphere into the PlayStation 2 game.
The X-Files: Resist or Serve followed the 1997 computer investigation title The X-Files: Unrestricted Access and the 1998 interactive-film game The X-Files Game, but it took a more action-oriented approach. It launched as a PlayStation 2 exclusive after a previously announced Xbox edition was cancelled. European releases followed in May 2004 under the Sierra Entertainment label, including the German title Akte X: Resist or Serve. For fans of early-2000s console horror, it remains a licensed game defined by its original Mulder-and-Scully story, choice of investigator, and effort to make a playable case file out of the series’ mix of skepticism, monsters, and alien conspiracy.
