About

The Simpsons Game for PlayStation 2 is a 2007 3D action-platformer based on the long-running animated series. Rebellion Developments handled the PS2 version for Electronic Arts, bringing Springfield’s most famous family to the console in North America on October 30, 2007, followed by other territories that November. It is an original adventure rather than a retelling of The Simpsons Movie, released earlier that year, and it builds its story around the deliberately absurd idea that Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie have learned they are video-game characters.

The adventure begins when the family discovers a mysterious instruction manual and realizes that each member has a special ability. The plot sends them from Springfield into a succession of exaggerated game worlds while alien invaders Kang and Kodos threaten the town. Its dialogue and situations lean into the show’s fourth-wall humor, making room for jokes about familiar pop culture, game conventions, the characters’ own history, and the business of making video games. The cast of the television series reprises its roles, helping the PS2 game retain the voices and comic rhythms associated with The Simpsons.

Play proceeds across episode-like stages built around platforming, simple combat, environmental puzzles, collectible hunting, and character-specific obstacles. Players control two members of the family in most levels and switch between them to use the right ability at the right time. Bart becomes Bartman to glide, climb selected surfaces, ride zip lines, and use his slingshot at distant targets. Lisa’s Hand of Buddha moves or attacks objects in the environment, while her saxophone can affect nearby enemies. Homer’s food-based transformations open other routes and attacks, including rolling, floating, and projectile-throwing forms.

Marge and Maggie add another kind of problem solving. Marge can direct a crowd to carry out tasks such as moving objects, repairing damaged items, or clearing barriers; Maggie can slip through vents and spaces too small for the rest of the family. These powers give the stages a cooperative puzzle structure even when playing alone, because progress depends on alternating between characters rather than relying on a single moveset. The PS2 release also supports local two-player cooperative play, allowing each person to take one of the characters assigned to a level.

The journey visits comic-book-style versions of several game genres and franchises without treating them as straightforward simulations. One chapter turns Bart’s superhero identity into a Gotham-like adventure, while others send the family through fantasy, war, Japanese role-playing, and arcade-inspired settings. Springfield locations, recurring characters, bizarre enemies, and self-aware cutscenes connect these parodies to the series’ world. Completion also encourages revisiting episodes to uncover character collectibles and other hidden material.

The Simpsons Game PS2 belongs to the late PlayStation 2 era and is one part of a larger 2007 release across several consoles and handhelds. Its PS2, Wii, and PSP editions were co-developed by Rebellion, while the Nintendo DS entry was made separately and follows a different side-scrolling format. For PS2 players, this version offers a cartoon-styled, two-player-capable platform adventure whose identity comes from pairing familiar Simpsons characters with powers, puzzles, and a knowingly playful satire of video games themselves.
