About

The Bouncer for PlayStation 2 is a cinematic 3D beat ’em up from DreamFactory, released by Square in Japan in December 2000 and by Square Electronic Arts in North America in March 2001. Set in the futuristic metropolis of Edge, it casts players as Sion Barzahd, Kou Leifoh, and Volt Krueger, three bouncers working at the Fate bar. Their ordinary night ends when Mikado Special Forces abduct Dominique, a young friend of Sion’s, sending the trio into a rescue mission against the powerful Mikado Group.

Story Mode presents the adventure as a sequence of short combat scenes connected by extensive in-engine and full-motion cinematics. At key transitions, the Active Character Selection system lets the player choose Sion, Kou, or Volt for the next section; the other two join the fight under computer control. This choice affects which character’s perspective leads the scene and helps encourage repeat playthroughs, while the central goal remains finding Dominique and confronting the forces behind her kidnapping.

Combat uses an immediate, close-range control scheme built around high, middle, and low attacks, along with jumps, guarding, throws, and character-specific techniques. Fights commonly place the three heroes against groups of opponents in compact arenas, where launched enemies can be struck again in the air or knocked into one another. When the team coordinates, a prompted Trinity Rush can unleash a combined attack against the enemies on screen. Blocking is limited by an unseen guard reserve, so timing defense matters as well as choosing when to press an offense.

The Bouncer blends that brawling foundation with light character growth. Clearing Story Mode encounters awards Bouncer Points, which can be spent through the Point Exchange System to raise health, power, and guard or unlock additional moves. Each playable bouncer develops separately, making character selection more than a cosmetic decision. The campaign also varies its pacing with objectives beyond direct fighting, including escape sequences and tasks that require finding a route or item before moving on.

Outside the main scenario, the PlayStation 2 game includes Survival Mode and Versus Mode. Survival Mode challenges a single player to last through ten increasingly difficult stages while carrying damage forward between them. Versus Mode supports one-on-one fights and Battle Royal matches; with a PlayStation 2 multitap, up to four people can participate at once. These modes separate the game’s fighting systems from the plot-focused structure of Story Mode.

The game arrived during the PlayStation 2’s early years and was Square’s first PlayStation 2 title released internationally. DreamFactory brought experience from the Tobal and Ehrgeiz fighting games, while the production paired action-game development with Square’s character-driven presentation. Takashi Tokita and Seiichi Ishii co-directed the project, Tetsuya Nomura designed the characters, and Noriko Matsueda and Takahito Eguchi composed its music. Its Japanese release was published by Square, whereas Sony Computer Entertainment handled European publishing.

The Bouncer is a standalone action game whose appeal lies in the contrast between its dramatic, branching-character presentation and its direct arcade-style group battles. Players follow Sion, Kou, and Volt across Edge’s streets and Mikado-controlled locations, build their chosen fighter through Bouncer Points, and revisit scenes from different viewpoints. For a PlayStation 2 library entry, it remains a distinctive early example of Square and DreamFactory combining a cinematic rescue story with multiplayer-ready brawler mechanics.
