About

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles PS2 is Konami’s 2003 action beat ’em up, developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Studios and released in North America on October 21, 2003. It draws on the then-new 2003 animated television series rather than the earlier arcade and 16-bit Turtles games or the 2007 film adaptation. Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael lead the adventure through a cel-shaded New York, with the game adapting story material from the show’s first season.

Story Mode follows the four brothers as danger spreads from their sewer home to the city streets, rooftops and the Foot Clan’s territory. The campaign brings in familiar allies and adversaries from the television series, including Master Splinter, Casey Jones, Baxter Stockman, the Purple Dragons and Shredder. Its episode-inspired scenarios encompass the Mouser threat, battles involving the Foot, the underground mutants and the return to New York, giving the adventure a serial structure rather than retelling a single movie plot.

Players choose one of the four Turtles and fight through 3D stages built around close-range brawling. Every brother has his own stages to clear and a distinct weapon style: Leonardo uses twin katana, Donatello carries a bo staff, Michelangelo wields nunchaku and Raphael fights with sai. Basic attacks, jumping, movement and defensive options are joined by combos and special techniques, while enemies arrive in groups that make positioning and crowd control important. The game also uses items such as health recovery and shuriken supplies during its battles.

The Story Mode supports one or two players with two DualShock 2 controllers connected, allowing a second Turtle to join the action. Completing each Turtle’s route tracks that character’s progress through the campaign, so the game gives the four leads separate paths through its television-series material. Makimono scrolls found during Story Mode add entries and unlockables to the Database, an in-game archive focused on the Turtles and the characters they encounter.

Beyond the campaign, the PS2 release includes a two-player VS Mode for one-on-one matches against another player or the CPU. The four Turtles are available from the start, while further fighters are earned through Story Mode; the manual also identifies more than 16 unlockable arenas alongside a random stage choice. That mode turns the campaign’s roster and locations into a direct duel format instead of simply reusing the cooperative brawling structure.

Challenge Mode provides another combat test once it has been unlocked. A chosen Turtle faces a succession of opponents with only one life, collecting the temporary health and shuriken benefits that appear between encounters before the next challenger arrives. Reaching the needed Story Mode milestone opens this mode, and clearing it reveals an additional reward, making the game’s extras tied to progress rather than immediately available menu options.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles marked Konami’s return to a console game built around the license after the early-1990s Tournament Fighters releases. It arrived on PlayStation 2 alongside GameCube, Xbox and Windows versions, while its 2003 Game Boy Advance counterpart was a separate game. On PS2, its cel-shaded presentation, two-player story option and unlock-driven versus play establish it as the opening chapter of Konami’s 2003-series game run, followed by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Battle Nexus in 2004 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: Mutant Nightmare in 2005.
