About
Tales of Legendia for PlayStation 2 is a fantasy action role-playing game from Namco, released in Japan in August 2005 and in North America on February 7, 2006. It is the seventh mainline entry in the Tales series and was made by Namco's Project MelFes team rather than the usual Tales development studio. The adventure follows 17-year-old Senel Coolidge, who reaches an immense vessel called the Legacy after a storm separates him and Shirley Fennes from their small boat. When Shirley is taken because of her connection to the people living on the ship, Senel begins a rescue mission that grows into a conflict over the Legacy, its past, and the future of the surrounding world.
The entire story takes place aboard the Legacy, a country-sized remnant of an advanced civilization in a world largely covered by water. Its inhabitants include the land-dwelling Orerines and the underwater Ferines, whose history and political tension shape the journey. Senel is soon joined by figures including the local sheriff Will Raynard, knight Chloe Valens, treasure hunter Norma Beatty, spear fighter Moses Sandor, scout Jay, and the amnesiac Grune. Their search for Shirley carries them through settlements, ruins, and deeper sections of the ship while the group uncovers why she is identified with the title Merines.
Exploration uses an overhead view of 3D locations, with towns, conversations, shops, and dungeon routes moving the story forward. Hostile areas use random encounters instead of visible enemies on the field. Battles shift to the game’s Crossover Linear Motion Battle System, or X-LiMBS, a real-time system played on a two-dimensional plane. The controlled character can move forward or back, jump, attack, guard, and use special abilities, while party allies follow assigned behavior settings. This fighting-game-inspired format was designed to make positioning, timing, aerial attacks, and combos important without leaving the role-playing framework.
Senel fights primarily at close range with physical Iron Eres, while other party members bring weapons, healing, spells, and Crystal Eres to the party. Up to four characters take part in combat at once from a larger roster of eight playable allies. Normal strikes and Eres techniques consume and build resources in different ways, and linked moves can extend an attack string. Victories award experience for character growth along with items such as Eres Stones that unlock additional skills. A Climax gauge can also be spent to stop enemies briefly, creating an opening for the party to press an attack or recover control of a difficult encounter.
Tales of Legendia keeps the series focus on party interaction but gives its structure an additional Character Quest section after the main scenario. These follow-up stories place individual companions in the foreground and return the group to locations from the central adventure with new events and confrontations. The game also features animated story scenes and character designs by Kazuto Nakazawa. Go Shiina composed the score, a notable change for a mainline Tales game, while the Japanese release used the opening song Tao by Do As Infinity; the North American edition uses different opening music.
For PlayStation 2 players, Tales of Legendia is a self-contained Tales entry built around a single unusual setting rather than a broad world map. Its combination of a large ensemble, ship-bound fantasy setting, randomized dungeon battles, and side-on action combat distinguishes it from other role-playing games of its period. The North American release preserves the central story of Senel and Shirley while presenting an English-language version of a game first published by Namco in Japan, making it a distinct chapter in the long-running series.
