About
Kino's Journey -the Beautiful World- is a single-player PS2 digital novel and adventure based on Keiichi Sigsawa's light novel series. It follows the traveler Kino and Hermes, her talking motorcycle, as they move between countries whose customs, people, and ideas give each stop its own self-contained story.
Rather than turning the series into an action game, the release emphasizes reading, narration, voices, and illustrated scenes. The main program adapts a selection of the source material, using its contemplative travelogue structure to let each country reveal a different point of view.
Kino is voiced by Ai Maeda, and the game uses fully voiced narration and characters alongside color artwork created under illustrator Kouhaku Kuroboshi's supervision. Its presentation was designed to preserve the quiet, story-focused atmosphere of the novels while making their places and encounters audiovisual.
In addition to the novel-style scenarios, three included stories have an adventure-oriented Another Story mode. In these sections the player takes the role of another traveler, explores the same settings, talks with residents, and can encounter information or events from a perspective outside Kino's own journey.
MediaWorks published the original PlayStation 2 game in Japan in 2003, with production credited to MediaWorks and Tycoon. This version is the Dengeki SP Series budget reissue released in Japan on November 25, 2004, not the later sequel Kino's Journey II.
