About

Sensible Soccer 2006 for PlayStation 2 is a fast, arcade-style football game released by Codemasters in June 2006. Developed by Kuju Entertainment with input from series creator Jon Hare, it brought the long-running Sensible Soccer name back to consoles as a modern 3D reinterpretation of the early-1990s favourite. This is not a conversion of the original Amiga game or the earlier PlayStation release: it is a distinct mid-2000s reboot, also issued for Xbox and Windows in PAL territories.

The PS2 game keeps the series focused on immediate, top-down football rather than a simulation presentation. Matches are viewed from high above the pitch, with a tilted camera that follows the play vertically. Its cel-shaded players have deliberately oversized heads, making the visual style markedly different from the tiny sprites associated with the classic games. The quick camera, brief pre-match setup and stripped-back presentation put the emphasis on getting a match underway with little delay.

Sensible Soccer 2006 expands the old one-button approach into a pad-friendly control scheme while retaining direct movement and ball play. A short-pass control handles simple distribution and low efforts, while the main long-ball control is used for crosses, more powerful shots and sliding challenges. A sprint button adds a limited stamina resource, so bursts of speed need to be used with care. Players can also use aftertouch to curve long passes and shots after striking the ball, an exaggerated bend that remains one of the series defining ideas.

Possession changes quickly, so passing into space, choosing a route toward goal and anticipating the automatic player selection are central to a match. The game lets the player move the goalkeeper with the right analogue stick, adding an extra defensive option during attacks. Before kick-off, teams can be arranged into one of several formations, and substitutions are available during play. The action is approachable on a standard PS2 controller, but it still rewards accurate passing and a feel for how much bend to put on a long ball.

Its roster is built around European club and international football, with around 350 teams and 50 preset competitions. The game does not use official player or club licences, so names are altered rather than presented as exact real-world data; team and player information can be edited. Alongside exhibition-style matches and competitions, a custom-team mode starts with a group of rookie players. Winning competitions earns skill points that can be spent to improve that created squad, giving the arcade matches a longer-term progression goal.

Multiplayer is a major part of the package, supporting local contests for up to four players. Sensible Soccer 2006 has no online play or in-match commentary, choices consistent with its compact, budget-minded design. In historical terms, the PS2 edition belongs to a short-lived revival of a series best known for its 1992 debut and the later Sensible World of Soccer. It preserves the overhead perspective, speedy rhythm and curling-ball identity of those games, but presents them through a 2006-era console engine rather than trying to reproduce the original pixel-art formula exactly.
