About

Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Operation Resurrection brings the series' World War II horror-action blend to PlayStation 2. Published by Activision and developed for PS2 by Raster Productions under id Software's executive production, it arrived in North America on May 30, 2003. This version adapts the 2001 PC shooter around the Quake III Arena technology for a console campaign, recasting the fight against the Nazi regime as a pulpy tale of secret science and the occult.

Players take the role of U.S. Army Ranger William "B.J." Blazkowicz, an operative attached to the Office of Secret Actions. His mission begins alongside the veteran agent known as Agent One, as the pair investigate the SS Paranormal Division and its dangerous experiments. What starts as an attempt to disrupt Nazi activity becomes a pursuit through prisons, villages, laboratories and buried ruins, where soldiers, undead creatures and engineered monsters all stand between B.J. and Operation Resurrection.

The action is first-person and built around moving through hostile strongholds while completing mission objectives. B.J. scavenges ammunition, health, armour and documents as he advances, and level briefings, notes and clipboards add context to the operation. Objectives range from escaping an installation or destroying a target to recovering intelligence and eliminating key enemies, while hidden treasure and secret areas reward careful exploration.

Combat gives B.J. a varied World War II and experimental arsenal. Pistols, submachine guns, rifles, grenades, rockets and flamethrowers cover the conventional side of the fight, while weapons such as the Venom Gun and electricity-firing Tesla Gun deal with the game's more bizarre threats. Some firearms offer alternate uses, including scoped rifle fire, and headshots are more damaging, encouraging precise aim amid the heavy firefights and boss encounters.

Operation Resurrection also slows the pace for infiltration. In stealth-focused sections, guards patrol their posts and can raise alarms that bring additional opposition; remaining unseen and using the knife or a close attack can keep an operation under control. The campaign steadily escalates from covert escapes and sabotage to assaults on supernatural strongholds, with new weapons, enemies and larger stakes arriving as B.J. uncovers the SS plan.

Its defining PS2 addition is an Egypt-set prologue that precedes the original campaign's Castle Wolfenstein opening. This new sequence introduces Agent One and sends the operatives through desert ruins, traps and underground tombs filled with mummies and other undead, giving the console story a clearer starting point. The PS2 edition also uses its own secret-reward system, allowing items to be purchased between levels with secrets found during play; unlike the Xbox counterpart, it does not include online multiplayer or two-player cooperative play.
