About

Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus for PlayStation 2 is Sonic Team's 2007 action role-playing follow-up to Phantasy Star Universe, published by Sega. Released in Japan in September and in North America that November, it returns to the science-fiction Gurhal system for a new chapter set after the original game's events. Although it adds to Phantasy Star Universe, the PS2 edition was sold as a standalone disc: players did not need the original PS2 game to begin. That distinction matters because the Xbox 360 release was delivered as downloadable expansion content, while the PS2 and Windows versions were packaged for separate purchase.

The game combines third-person action combat with character building and mission-based progression. Players make a GUARDIAN from Gurhal's human, Newman, CAST, and Beast races, choose a look and voice, then develop the character through equipment, levels, skills, and battle types. In real time, a character can fight up close with melee weapons, use guns at range, or employ TECHNIC abilities, with attacks and special Photon Arts shaping how each weapon feels. Missions send a party through hostile areas, where defeating enemies, managing health and recovery items, collecting loot, and preparing for bosses form the central loop.

Ambition of the Illuminus expands the selection of weapons, Photon Arts, enemies, missions, clothing, and character options available in Phantasy Star Universe. Its class system encourages different roles within a group rather than locking every character into one approach: a player can alter their combat style by changing the equipment and type they use. The PlayStation 2 release also supports its own offline story experience, so its added campaign is not simply an online-only supplement. That structure gives solo players a way to build a custom protagonist and follow the sequel's narrative without taking over the fixed lead role used by the original game's story mode.

The new story is commonly known as Episode 2. After the crises involving the SEED and the Endrum Collective, the Gurhal system faces another threat in the secretive Illuminus organization. The player begins as a new GUARDIAN working alongside instructor Laia Martinez, while former hero Ethan Waber has become implicated in an apparent assassination attempt. Investigating what happened leads through the three worlds of Gurhal—industrial Parum, the religious and natural landscapes of Neudaiz, and rugged Moatoob—as the conflict exposes the Illuminus campaign against the system's non-human peoples. Familiar figures from the first game return, but the player-created lead changes the perspective of the continuation.

Gurhal provides the setting for both the offline adventure and the game's original network-oriented design. The system includes the Guardians Colony and three culturally distinct planets, whose populations and political tensions are central to the series' backdrop. On PlayStation 2, Ambition of the Illuminus was built around exploration of lobbies and mission areas, cooperative online play, and social spaces such as the casino lobby, alongside the single-player content. The original online service is no longer active, but that historical design helps explain why the game emphasizes meeting other GUARDIAN characters, forming parties, trading battle roles, and replaying missions for experience and equipment.

For Phantasy Star fans, Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus is a distinct entry rather than the 2006 base game with a small add-on attached. It advances the Universe storyline, broadens the playable character systems, and makes the PS2 version especially notable as a self-contained route into its Episode 2 campaign. The release sits between Phantasy Star Universe and the later PlayStation Portable games that continued to revisit Gurhal, while retaining the mixture of customizable avatars, fast-paced combat, and space-fantasy world building that defined the Universe branch of the series.
