About
Blitz: The League for PlayStation 2 is Midway's 2005 arcade-style American football game, built from the same hard-hitting lineage as NFL Blitz but set outside the NFL. Released in October 2005 for PS2 and Xbox, it replaces licensed clubs and current players with a fictional professional circuit called The League. Former NFL linebacker Lawrence Taylor serves as the game's cover athlete and voices Quentin Sands, the intimidating captain of the New York Nightmare.
The on-field rules deliberately favor quick, exaggerated action over simulation. Teams use eight players per side, a first down requires 30 yards, and the game does without referees or conventional penalties. Players call offensive and defensive plays, take control of the ball carrier or selected defender, and use the open field to pass, run, tackle, force turnovers, and score. The altered format gives each possession room for long gains and keeps games moving at a brisk pace.
A central mechanic is the Clash meter. Successful plays such as scoring, gaining yards, stopping opponents behind the line, and creating turnovers build its charge. Once available, Clash lets players attempt enhanced actions including powerful stiff-arms, evasive moves, quarterback escapes, and especially punishing defensive hits. These hits can drain an opponent's effectiveness or cause injuries, while further success unlocks even more potent Unleash moves. The injury presentation and the choice to treat or temporarily mask some injuries are part of the game's deliberately heightened football world.
Campaign mode gives that world a story-driven structure. The player creates a team, selects its identity and key personnel, then works upward through the fictional league's three divisions after a damaging loss to Sands's Nightmare. Progress depends on winning regular-season and championship games as well as managing training, facilities, equipment, and player development. Pre-game scenes introduce opponents and their standout players, while cutscenes follow conflicts around the club and its push toward a League championship.
Away from the campaign, Blitz: The League supports exhibition-style football and customization of teams, players, and stadium elements, providing ways to set up a more immediate match. Its fictional teams and satirical professional-football setting arose after Electronic Arts secured exclusive NFL game rights, leaving Midway to take the Blitz formula in a different direction. The PlayStation 2 original was followed by an Xbox 360 version and the PSP release Blitz: Overtime, while Blitz: The League II continued the series on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2008.
