About

Dynasty Warriors 3: Xtreme Legends for PlayStation 2 is Omega Force and Koei's 2002–2003 expansion to the PS2 action game Dynasty Warriors 3. Known in Japan as Shin Sangoku Musou 2: Moushouden, it is the first entry in the long-running Xtreme Legends line. Rather than introducing a new numbered chapter, this companion disc returns to the series' romanticized Three Kingdoms setting and expands the adventures of officers who had previously been outside the main story campaign.

Its foundation is the series' large-scale hack-and-slash battle format. A player takes command of a larger-than-life officer, cuts through formations of soldiers, confronts rival generals, and works toward the battlefield objective, often the defeat of an opposing commander. Stages draw on the era and on Romance of the Three Kingdoms, presenting rival forces such as Wei, Wu, Shu, and unaffiliated armies in a dramatic version of ancient China. Character growth, weapons, equipment, mounted movement, and the Musou gauge remain central to the progression inherited from Dynasty Warriors 3.

Xtreme Legends gives seven previously non-aligned officers their own Musou Mode stories: Lu Bu, Diao Chan, Dong Zhuo, Yuan Shao, Zhang Jiao, Meng Huo, and Zhu Rong. These campaigns revisit and rearrange battles from the original game with new scenarios and events, putting the focus on figures whose roles were not covered by the base game's kingdom-led campaigns. Free Mode provides another way to revisit available encounters and experiment with the broad officer roster, while the expansion's new material emphasizes alternate perspectives on the Three Kingdoms conflict.

Koei added several systems intended to lengthen the PS2 game's pursuit of unlocks. Four Challenge Mode variations offer score- and objective-oriented play outside the regular campaigns. New items and a fourth weapon element, Wind, join the existing equipment system; fifth-level weapons can be earned for the officers. Two additional difficulty choices, Novice and Very Hard, broaden the range between an easier start and a tougher test for experienced players.

The most substantial new management feature is bodyguard customization. Instead of treating the accompanying troop as a fixed group of soldiers, players can name and tailor bodyguard units, choose their type, growth emphasis, and uniform colour, and work with bodyguard weapons and special items. This makes the support force a more personal part of the battlefield routine, whether it is helping contain enemy soldiers or accompanying an officer during a campaign.

Dynasty Warriors 3: Xtreme Legends can function as an expansion disc on its own, but its full relationship with Dynasty Warriors 3 is defined by Koei's MIX JOY feature. Loading data from the original PS2 game lets players bring the expansion's additions into the base game's content and retain relevant saved progress, while the Xtreme Legends disc supplies its own new stories and revised scenarios. That disc-swapping approach makes it a distinctive early example of the series' expansion format: a focused addition for Dynasty Warriors 3 players rather than Dynasty Warriors 4 or a separate sequel.
